George Georgiou is a freelance British photographer and photojournalist. He is best known for his work in Eastern Europe.
George received a BA Honours in Photography, Film and Video Arts from the University of Westminster in 1987. He then joined Panos Pictures in 1999.
Over the last decade, George Georgiou has photographed extensively in the Balkans, Eastern Europe and Turkey. There his work focuses on identity. Moreover, George documents people caught between communities, cultures and ideologies. As George prefers to concentrate on long term projects, he has spent time living and working in Serbia, Greece and Turkey.
“When you first arrive in a place, you are so informed by images you have already seen that it is a burden you have to lose,” says Georgiou.
Furthermore, Georgiou’s work is collected by several institutions and private collectors. Amongst which are the Museum of Modern Art, NY and the Elton John collection.
