Homma took the photographs in the winters of 2009 to 2018. He solely continues to trail traces of red blood in white snow that goes up steep slopes and across a river. Consequently, the resulting photographs are at once abstract and symbolic like ritualistic stains or calligraphic compositions. Each scene involves some dramas of humans and their targets as same as Homma’s clear photographs of cities involve confusion of lives and people. Considered by some to be sacred, deer in Japan have controversially faced culls due to their growing population, which upset agricultural communities struggling to protect their crops. To aid their mission in reducing numbers, the government encourages local hunters to take matters into their own hands. Homma photographs the effects – the red vestiges of wild life in the snow.

Related Links

More books by Takashi Homma here. More books by Mack here.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/products/takashi-homma-trails_c38e2cb2-727c-4d80-88e0-e49b3882b4fb.jpg?v=1639486655
hibi
Hibi

Hibi by Masahisa Fukase. Each of the black and white images painstakingly attend to the road’s surface – the worn road-markings, the fading lines and also arrows eroded by the city’s innumerable inhabitants, a web of fissures in the asphalt. In 1992, Fukase printed and also painted the works for a solo exhibition, 'Private Scenes ‘92', held at Nikon Salon in Tokyo. He overlaid a set of bromide prints with fluid drawings in brightly coloured inks and on every image the physical presence of the artist is traced, a shadow presence which seems to offer a reading, an interpretation but one that can never be fully resolved.

Artist Bio

Fukase has been a seminal figure in contemporary Japanese photography since the 1960s. Homma does not seek to index any particular city but to render a shadow world, a city's unconscious caught in a dark chamber, suspended in the camera’s box. The camera obscura offers a repetition, like the reflection shimmering in Narcissus’s pool. The narcissistic city is a city transfixed upon its own image – a mirror city, laced with repetition and reflections. A city looking at its reflection, a city caught in a dark chamber, a city observing its camera obscura inversion – flickering inside the camera’s box.

Artist Bio

Takashi Homma (born in Tokyo, 1962) studied photography at Nihon University College of Art but left in 1984 to take a job as an in-house photographer at a Tokyo advertising agency. It was also the beginning of photography by private lines, and the one with the strongest assertion was said to be "private photography." In other words, something that "imprints me" through the object. The main characters were Masahisa Fukase and Nobuyoshi Araki. From the 90s onwards, the expression "Private diary" was frequently used, and several works with the same title were published. Between these countries emerging artist Fumi Ishino has resided. The work channels his nomadic experience of moving back and forth between two distinct cultures. Both with divergent social norms and values. Following an aleatoric structure, the book presents images as diverse as Japanese school children, American astronauts, vernacular architecture, laboratory scenes, local cuisines, animals and studio still-lifes. In conclusion, Blurring distinctions between the local and the foreign, the domestic and the cosmic, Rowing a Tetrapod delights in confusing cultural conceptions, fabricating an imaginary space that is bent towards misinterpretation.

In English, a tetrapod is a four-limbed vertebrate that typically refers to amphibians and reptiles but also includes mammals and primates. He entered the field as a commercial photographer for the advertising firm Dentsu, pursuing his own artistic interests in his spare time.

Related Links

So, more books by Nobuyoshi Araki you can find here.

Also, for more books by Artone click here.

Blue Period / Last Summer by Nobuyoshi Araki. They do! I’d say Last Summer is the future; it has a certain sense of resignation about it. Blue Period is the past, because it’s about how memory inhabits us. But we don’t yet have a memory of the future. You had better get both of them [laughter]. That’s right! Seriously. They are awesome. They knock me out. The red you see in Last Summer is red of blood. And the blood must be shed. Blue just won’t cut it. It would just seem off. I’d say [Last Summer] surpasses Mizoguchi’s Ugetsu Monogatari. —It reminds me of the faded tones of old movies on VHS. True. When we watch those movies, we watch them with the already lost tones. The original is forever gone. The same can be said of ancient temples like Horyu-ji. Restoration kind of kills its beauty, as I’m convinced old shrines and temples were designed with the weathering away of colors over time in mind. It makes them more interesting. Blue Period, too, goes all the way back to the beginning. In a way, my path as a photographer was laid out for me thanks to everything that happened before that. You know, when we look at Atget’s photobooks, what we are looking at are the faded tones of countless reproductions. We can’t see as Atget actually saw back then. But we still look at the pictures seriously and as real things.

Related Links

So, more books by Nobuyoshi Araki you can find here.

Also, for more books by Dashwood click here.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/products/nobuyoshi-araki-blue-period-last-summer.jpg?v=1639139828
masahisa-fukase
Masahisa Fukase

Masahisa Fukase. For example, with motifs ranging from snapshots of women kissing to closeups of faces to t-shirts with stylized lips to walls covered in rotting advertisement posters (showing lips) to rooms covered in lip photographs.

Artist Bio

Daidō Moriyama is a Japanese photographer, born in 1938 in Osaka. Firstly, he studied photography before moving to Tokyo in 1961. To begin with, he worked as an assistant to Eikoh Hosoe, a Japanese photographer and filmmaker. As a result, he began to produce his own collection of photographs. Afterwards, he ended up depicting the forgotten areas and darker side of cities. Shortly after, Japan Photo-critics awarded him the New Artist Award.

Hence, Moriyama’s images are now known for capturing the breakdown of Japanese tradition. His work captures life during and following the American occupation of Japan after World War II. In particular the effects of industrialisation and the consequential shift in urban life. His images focus on the areas left behind in a rapidly changing city.

He received the Infinity Award for Lifetime Achievement from the International Center of Photography in New York in 2004 as well as the Hasselblad Award in 2019.

Related Links

More books by Daido Moriyama here.

More books by Akio Nagasawa here.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/products/daido-moriyama-lips-lips-lips-e1595502266781.jpg?v=1639151311
inversion-paris-edition
Inversion (Paris Edition)

Inversion (Paris Edition) by Daisuke Yokota. The photographer explores Tokyo's daily life and captures scenes that verge on the fantastic. His work is steeped in Japanese pictorial tradition and so the framings and bright colours of his images confer an element of otherness. Also, the forms, textures, colourful hues, and depth of field develop a visual vocabulary which pops and is poetic. So, as visions from dreams or nightmares, the presence of Mizutani's birds saturate the world of the city and restore its mystery. As a result, this publication is part of the Des Oiseaux (On birds) collection that celebrates, through the vision of different artists, their immense presence in a world where they are now vulnerable. A small provincial town in the northern Japanese province of Hokkaido. In August 1971, at the age of 35, Masahisa Fukase returned home from Tokyo. Where he had moved in the 1950s. He realised that the Fukase Photographic Studio, which his younger brother managed, combined with the growing family members, constituted the perfect subject for a series of portraits.

Then, between 1971 and 1989, he returned regularly and used the studio, the large format Anthony view camera and the changing family line up as the basis for the series. True to his style, Fukase often also introduced third party models and humorous elements to juxtapose the ineluctable reality of time passing and the dwindling family group. He continued the series through his father’s death in 1987, up until the closure of the Fukase studio due to bankruptcy in 1989, and the consequential dispersion of the family.

Family (Kazoku) was released in 1991, and was Fukase’s last book. It begins with a photograph of the family studio and the following 31 images are family portraits made in the studio in chronological order. The book includes an extensive text written by Fukase himself and a modern essay by Tomo Kosuga.

Related Links

More books by Masahisa Fukase here.

More books by MACK books here.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/products/masahisa-fukase-family_c43578f4-32fd-4dbd-b816-d3cfcb61892c.jpg?v=1639485383
mantis-daido-moriyama
Mantis

Mantis by Daido Moriyama. As well as literally hundreds of exhibitions mounted around the world during the past three decades. His subjects are often sprawling, both geographically and metaphorically, with one influencing the next. In Mantis, however, the act of photographing becomes the subject of the book, decades after the fact. In this beautifully produced artist’s book, Moriyama presents 21 frames printed as full-bleed enlargements, all from one contact sheet with an imprinted date of 1987.

The book is divided into three unintended chapters, the result of Daido having photographed one subject until his was satisfied, moving on to the next, and then repeating this once more. The book opens, fantastically, with a close-up of the hand of Masahisa Fukase, the artist’s friend and contemporary, holding a praying mantis which has caught the attention of them both; after several frames, Moriyama abruptly stops and then continues the roll of film inside of a studio apartment elsewhere. A female subject unwittingly and slowly becomes mantis-like in her poses, and gradually she merges into yet another subject, a mysterious set of portraits whose timelessness is given away only by the frames that preceded it.

Yodaka by Toshio Shibata. As well as a withering of the student movement and the various terrorist acts that had shaken the global community. The early 1980s was then a brief interlude of calm. Anticipating the end of the long Showa era. Before Japan was deluged by the bubble economy. So, I had just returned to Japan in 1980. After studying for four years in Flanders where time moves slowly. The atmosphere is also very relaxed. In addition to the rapidly advancing westernization, the reality of this new Tokyo, where old pre-war Showa is blended with modern Showa (post-war) looked disorderly and chaotic to me. It was inspired by Yusuke Yamatani’s interest in other people’s houses prompted by having my own family. Despite being an inorganic entity, houses change together with its residents and can never be separated from human activities. Even with the use of an infrared camera that responds to invisible rays, we cannot, of course, take a peek into these houses. The desire to have a glimpse of human activities despite its impossibility, made him strongly aware of “seeing” and “being seen.” We are now living a contradiction where on one hand we fear being seen by others, while on the other, our desire to see and know more keeps escalating as we come into contact with a large amount of information on a daily basis. Entering into the realm of the other from the overwhelming abyss between the self and the other that looms over residential areas late at night, makes him feel, together with the chasm between himself and the world, a peculiar feeling of comfort. - Statement from the publisher

Related Links

More books by Yusuke Yamatani here.

More books by TM Projects here.

Crystal Love Starlight by Mayumi Hosokura. Her work is representative of the style of a younger Japanese generation. In it, nudes and nature often invite viewers to use their imagination. This particular series was inspired by a real criminal case. Hosokura discovered the details of the case while searching the archives of a local newspaper. From the short article, which is reprinted in the back of the book, we learn that a small restaurant located in a rural area of Maebashi city came to light in 1992 “on suspicion of running a brothel”. Also, the restaurant manager and a waiter were subsequently arrested. It was estimated that this shady business might have netted the men as much as 50 million yen since its opening in 1990. This is equivalent to roughly $400,000 today. The restaurant was called “Crystal Love Starlight”. Its rather meaningless trashy title is an example of the incomprehensible English naming so often used by Japanese snack bars and love hotels to lure in customers.

Related Links

More books by Mayumi Hosokura you can find here.

For more books by Tycoon please click here.

To see more of Hosokura's work please click here.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/products/mayumi-hosokura-crystal-love-starlight_a0d0e8b7-3139-4938-8924-07c8c60c4416.jpg?v=1639486798
moto-daido-moriyama-photobook-setanta-books-signed-print
Moto (One Picture Book)

Moto (One Picture Book) by Daido Moriyama. Most of the subjects depicted here are those that I spotted on the streets, on the exterior walls of buildings or lying in the gutter during the course of my everyday life, things that tend to remain unnoticed, obscure corners of largely deserted back alleys, or human figures that linger inconspicuously - things that catch my eye but generally remain unremarked.... I think they can be said to resemble the world as seen through the eye of a dog. It is not a beautiful city of dreams, filled with marvelous scents; rather it is a mundane world overflowing with a confusing interaction of people and things ... It resembles a jigsaw puzzle, but unlike a jigsaw puzzle there is no number to the pieces it contains and no matter how many photographs I may take, it will never be complete. Although the project originated in January 2019, 78 presents a selection of unseen photographs selected from the Suda archive in November 2019. Shot between 1971 and 1983, these photographs have never been published until this day. So, in this book, Suda’s unique and profoundly urban vision unfolds in a series of contrasts and allusions. Therefore. the unexpected presence of animals and children’s mischievous looks fill up the streets, adding a sense of strangeness to these everyday scenes. From Tokyo to its surrounding prefectures, the photographer’s striking world is immersed in urban energy, bringing out – with a hint of humour – its spirit. The same energy can also be found in Suda’s trademark deep and contrasted blacks, a unique hallmark of his work. “It was only upon our return to France that I realised Suda had passed away at 78, the exact number of prints we had intuitively selected on that autumn afternoon. This book is a tribute to the great photographer he was.” Cécile Poimboeuf-Koizumi

Related Photography Books

More books by Issei Suda here
More books by Chose Commune

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/products/issei-suda-78_ee2e8cb0-9dc6-490e-99a8-4095f5a70257.jpg?v=1639499199
yodaka-print-edition
Yodaka - Print Edition

Yodaka - Print Edition by Toshio Shibata. As well as a withering of the student movement and the various terrorist acts that had shaken the global community. The early 1980s was a brief interlude of calm. Anticipating the end of the long Showa era. Before Japan was deluged by the bubble economy. I had just returned to Japan in 1980. After studying for four years in Flanders where time moves slowly. The atmosphere is very relaxed. In addition to the rapidly advancing westernization, the reality of this new Tokyo, where old pre-war Showa is blended with modern Showa (post-war) looked disorderly and chaotic to me. And it was not easy to capture it visually. I struggled to realize my own mode of expression in this home country of mine. So, this oeuvre focuses on vending machines exclusively during long winter nights. Subsequently, the seemingly insignificant street appliances become an important part of Ohashu’s strong aesthetic vision, a series of full bodied characters that he subtly turns into significant markers of our lonely, modern human lives in the contemporary world. The afterword, written by the photographer, speaks about how he sought to humanise these mechanical machines. Somehow, they manage to keep on going, to persevere, even in the most remote places in Japan and in the darkest depths of winter, providing us with some light even in the gloomiest times. Constructed using an unusual Leporello style bookbinding the book opens totally flat, in a chain of imagery. In this black-and-white work, Shiraishi presents a series of poetic images taken in wintry Dōtō in Eastern Hokkaido. The central theme is a herd of deer that Shiraishi encountered while travelling; the shy animals wander the snowy landscapes, across frozen lakes and barren forests. Shiraishi keeps her distance to the animals. In some photos, they let her come near, but they always keep a watchful eye on her. She encounters other animals as well – large birds, foxes – and wide, clear landscape shots give us a sense of the surroundings. Shiraishi’s series masterfully creates a sense of wonder, as if one is at the doors to a world of magic realism, as if the deer have decided to permit us access to an otherwise secret part of the natural world.

Related Links

Books by Chieko Shiraishi

Books by Sokyusha

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/products/shiraishi-chieko-shikawatari_ad910f32-7962-4f18-bad3-eb8982b9091e.jpg?v=1639647670
tokyo-modern-pictorial
Tokyo Modern Pictorial

Tokyo Modern Pictorial by Issei Suda. Suda's intention was to show what has changed and what hasn't. This way, he decided to focus both on the present and what lied in front of his camera whilst paying the same attention to what was modern 30 years ago. In his classic style, Suda captures his surroundings emphasising what would be too subtle to all of us. Tokyo Modern Pictorial brings us the iconic city in different facets, overlapping through what changes and what stays the same.

Related links

Books by Issei Suda

Books by Zen Foto Gallery

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/products/issei-suda-tokyo-modern-pictorial_bc488838-68f2-446b-ba23-b76b7e12f13a.jpg?v=1639647678
hitozuma-eros-4
Hitozuma Eros 4
Hitozuma Eros 4 by Nobuyoshi Araki.
