Lee Friedlander

Lee Friedlander was born in 1934 in Washington. He began photographing the American social landscape in 1948.  His photographs include fragments of store-front reflections, structures framed by fences, posters and street signs.

Lee Friedlander photographed his surroundings while suffering from arthritis and housebound. Firstly he had an ability to organise a vast amount of visual information in dynamic compositions. Friedlander has made humorous images among the chaos of city life. As well as the dense natural landscape, and countless other subjects. Friedlander is also recognized for a group of self-portraits he began in the 1960s.

Included among the many monographs designed and published by Friedlander himself are Sticks and Stones, Letters From the People and Apples and Olives.
