The first meal of the day, a daily ritual, started to present itself as a natural still life. It is always the same, yet it is always different. The quality of light, the objects and the space between them are ever-changing. For me, breakfast is a peaceful time, a time of reflection. It is also a time to contemplate the day ahead and to believe that better times are coming. As Ian Fleming wrote, “Hope makes a good breakfast. Eat plenty of it.” The series was shot over four years, but really came together under lockdown when my home became a more central focus.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/products/niall-mcdiarmid-breakfast_12d71383-e523-4b2f-b2ac-d5f2d86c43f4.jpg?v=1639651381
under-vancouver-1972-1982
Under Vancouver 1972 - 1982

Under Vancouver 1972 - 1982 by Greg Girard. Soon after Vancouver began to be noticed by the wider world. Next, the city began refashioning itself as an urban resort on nature’s doorstep. Therefore, attracting attention as a destination for real estate investment. At that time, long before post-9/11 security concerns sealed off the working waterfront from the city. Many of Vancouver’s downtown and east side streets ended at the waterfront. Which was an area filled with commercial fishing docks, cargo terminals, and bars and cafes for waterfront workers and sailors. Pawn-shop windows downtown displayed outboard motors, chainsaws and fishing gear. So, wandering these streets, living in cheap hotels, Girard photographed the workaday (and night) world of the city where he grew up.

Futhermore, the photographs in Under Vancouver 1972–1982 were made before Girard began earning a living as a magazine photographer. Next, he established a formal practice as an artist. They reveal an early interest in the hidden and the overlooked, the use of colour film at night, and the extended photographic inquiry of a specific place, all of which became signature features of later books such as City of Darkness and City of Darkness Revisited (about the infamous Kowloon Walled City), Phantom Shanghai and Hanoi Calling. Under Vancouver 1972–1982 is the first comprehensive collection of Girard’s early photographs of Vancouver. Made in and of the moment, a young photographer’s earliest engagements (often featuring the underside of the city), the pictures now form an unintended photographic record of a Vancouver that has all but disappeared.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/files/Greg_Girard_Under_Vancouver_signed_2f29c90a-33b3-49f5-b2a1-819f28daf7bb.jpg?v=1769691938
double-life-kelli-connell
Double Life

Double Life by Kelli Connell. He has been called the 'father of colour photography' and since the 1990s he is widely regarded as the leading and most influential colour photographer of the twentieth century. Ancient and Modern is a collection of photographs chosen from Eggleston's earliest photographs taken in the American South, Africa and also England. The photographs depict subjects and objects from everyday life and it is Eggleston's unique ability to find beauty as well as striking displays of colour, in ordinary scenes. Mark Holborn, in his illuminating introduction, writes about the dark undercurrent of these mundane scenes as viewed through Eggleston's lens: '[Eggleston's] subjects are, on the surface, the ordinary inhabitants and environs of suburban Memphis and Mississippi - friends, family, barbecues, back yards, a tricycle and also the clutter of the mundane. The normality of these subjects is deceptive, for behind the images there is a sense of lurking danger.'

Related Links

More books by William Eggleston here.

More books by Random House here.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/products/william-eggleston-ancient-and-modern-scaled.jpg?v=1639652747
us-then
US / THEN

US / THEN by Robin Laananen and Warpaint. Featuring photographs of Warpaint taken over 7 years on the road by their tour manager and photographer, Robin Laananen.

First edition (2017). Collected together in this book, the images that resulted are scattered with the debris of a domesticity that, initially, seems familiar. Yet the more time we spend in here with them, the more perceptible the sound of this place becomes— in an increasing disorientation of our own presumptions. This book reveals as much about us as it does its subject, as it gradually peels back overlapping skins of fear and desire. We find warmth in the ache of day-to-day banality, held tight together by unspeakable bonds and a hand-me-down sense of threat.

We catch glimpses of hand-written letters, a shopping list, transcriptions of remembered conversations, of violent tales of self-affirmation that slide along a blade of hilarity… the punctuation of the endless now of time by extreme events that then give way to more waiting; that then give way to waves of opiatic calm between unseen confrontations that attempt to correct the distortions of the sounds of home that we have come to rely on. And yet, throughout this book, we find love, compassion, incidental hope and the joy of familiar patterns. We find the structures of trust in kept animals and in the birds that offer release. And all the while, beyond the fires, we hear the distant sound of the external world, decaying in its failures.” - From the foreword by Niall Sweeney The Budgie Died Instantly is Nik Roche’s debut monograph. This enormous man-made lake is the largest in the world. Spanning half of Ghana its surface is scattered with eerie tree trunks where once you would find dense forests. Fishing is now one of the main industries for the people here. Demanding long hours in often challenging conditions. Jeremy's series follows the story of the fisher boys he encountered here. Amidst all the magic and beauty of the lake, there remains a starker reality. Thousands of children work in its massive fishing industry — and many of these children are trafficked into labour.

10% of this book’s profits will be donated to the NGO, International Justice Mission, who work with partners in the criminal justice system to ensure that law enforcement and prosecutors have the training and support they need to identify victims, launch rescues, arrest suspects, and to help create better circumstances for these boys.

Brilliant Parade by Josh Edgoose.

Hardback with tipped-in image in new condition

92 pages

51 pictures

265 x 238 mm

About

Brilliant Parade by British photographer Josh Edgoose is a celebration of the character and energy of the streets of London through the serendipitous interactions that happen every day and usually go unnoticed. Edgoose spent five years observing and photographing the encounters and moods of the city, capturing its colourful, ever-changing essence. He strived to organise the chaotic scenes in order to discover the disposition of a city that contains everything in its vast magnitude. Edgoose takes the different pieces of this metropolis and seamlessly puts them together, showing us its secrets. In Brilliant Parade, bold colours, gestures, notes of humour and emotion intertwine to build a portrait of London’s iconic streets, giving us a feel for the rhythm of a city that moves fast and is the grandiose stage for a diverse cast of characters who inadvertently fill the frame and get right under the spotlight in Edgoose’s candid street photographs. Some bodies were never found and relatives of the missing continue to this day to search for their loved ones. Stranger imagines a survivor returning to Dubai fifty years later and what they would see. Through photographs and small anecdotes, the viewer is taken on a journey through a city that is both awe-inspiring and alienating. A city that has grown at a breath-taking pace from a population of 90,0000 in the 1960s to over 2 million in the current day, and continues to draw people from all over the world with its promise of riches.

The backbone of the project is the story of the shipwreck, transporting the viewer back and forth in history. But also it is acting as a reminder of the fragility and skin-deep nature of Dubai. Furthermore, reflecting this fragility and suggesting the feelings of loneliness and disorientation often experienced by residents of Dubai, the book is printed on transparent paper. The result is that the layered images fade in and out of view, interspersed with quotes, memories, and images of the shipwreck itself.

Related Links

So, more books by Olivia Arthur you can find here.

Also, for more books by Fishbar please click here.

Gathered Leaves by Alec Soth.

First edition (2015).

First impression.

Clamshell box which contains miniature copies of four Soth books: Songbook, Niagara, Broken Manual and Sleeping by the Mississippi.

Flat signed inside box.

As new condition. As a result, his photographs are original and entertaining, accessible and understandable. But at the same time they show us in a penetrating way how we live, how we present ourselves to others, and what we value." - Thomas Weski So, this encyclopedia of Parr covers his long career as an image maker and has an insightful text written by longstanding friend and colleague, Val Williams. The book was produced to accompany his retrospective exhibition at the Barbican in London, which then toured over 10 more venues. It established Norfolk’s reputation as one of the leading photographers in the world. Furthermore, it has been exhibited at more than thirty venues worldwide. So, in 2010 Simon Norfolk returned to Afghanistan. This time he followed in the footsteps of the nineteenth-century Irish photographer John Burke. Burke was a superb, yet virtually unknown, war photographer. His eloquent and beautiful photographs of the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-1880) provide an extraordinary record. Using unwieldy wet-plate collodion negatives and huge wooden cameras he shot landscapes and battlefields. But also archaeological sites and street scenes.

Burke also captured portraits of British officers and ethnological group portraits of Afghans. The range is tremendously broad, yet suffused with a delicate humanism. These are also the first-ever pictures made in Afghanistan. With this book, one hundred and thirty years too late, John Burke’s time has come at last. Norfolk’s new work looks at what happens when you add half a trillion US war dollars to an impoverished and broken country such as Afghanistan. Very loosely re-photographic in nature, the work is presented as an artistic collaboration between Burke and Norfolk. It features photographs by Burke never before published as well as Norfolk’s new pictures from Kabul and Helmand.

Related Links

So, more books by Burke you can find here.

Also, for more books by Norfolk please click here.

Last by not least, more books by Dewi Lewis here.

First edition of Road Wallah by Dougie Wallace. In ‘ON’, black and white figures stalk across Dublin streetscapes, by turns lost, menacing, wary, browbeaten or entranced – but always at odds in some way with their environment. As in ‘i’, the photographs were mostly taken on Dublin’s Parnell Street and O’Connell Street. But here the historic role of those two streets as zones of resistance, protest and insurrection is far more present. The very title of the book itself evokes a resistance – that doggedly existential kind identified by Samuel Beckett’s narrator in ‘The Unnameable’: ‘You must go on, I can’t go on, I’ll go on.’

Photographer by Eamonn Eccabe

First edition

First impression

Medium format hardcover in near fine condition.

No internal markings. She is moral. She is everything a photographer should be.' Plachy's poetic and also visually stunning work brilliantly combines memoir and wry observation. In this major retrospective collection of images ranging over forty years. Capturing the curiousness of everyday events, Plachy's pictures combine personal narrative with public display. Also, through the immediacy of her experience, encapsulate the timelessness of metaphor and dream. 'What makes you push the shutter has to do with seeking a kind of perfection, a harmony in the world,' Plachy says. 'You are instinctively aware it's there, but you've got to be completely alert and quick and so deeply awake that it moves you.'

Known for her weekly pictures in The Village Voice, Sylvia Plachy has published widely in The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, TIME, Fortune, The Smithsonian, Wired, Aperture, Artforum, Metropolis, Grand Street, as well as Granta, among others. Plachy was born in Budapest, Hungary, to parents who hid during the Nazi persecution only to escape the Hungarian revolution, buried under corn in the back of a truck. She now lives in New York City with her husband Elliott Brody, and is the mother of Academy Awardwinning actor Adrien Brody. 'Tremendously gifted and talented as an artist, she is also a real survivor and the hardest working person I know,' says her son.

Related Links

More books by Sylvia Plachy here.

More books by Umbrage here.

Dutch Encounters by Manuel Alvarez Bravo. All are very pretty, but they do not yet know their own power of seduction. They have been promised Christmas: it is like a rite of passage, a moment of unreality in which the person does not know what the outcome will be. The smiles of the festive season can hide many fears and already some regrets and disappointments. In work carried out during the year 2000, in these 62 photographs, Bettina Rheims represents three phases in the coming-of-age of a young girl: The first shows the background of a young girl's own environment, the pinks and blues of junior theatre. The second incorporates a projected backdrop that is between cinema and nightmare and grasps at the dreams and potential of the future. In the third nothing is left, except a person -- a woman in a white box where the ribbon has been cut to reveal that it is the true self that is the real gift.

Related Links

So, more books by Bettina Rheims you can find here.

Also, more books by Kehayoff here.

Other Edens by Nick Waplington. Living in council houses in Nottingham. In Other Edens, his global series of panoramic images. Waplington imposes his body as a physical and also metaphorical presence in the landscape. The omnipresent artist - head shaven, and also naked so as to deny the possibility of locating him in time - appears in evocative scenes ranging from Naples to Easter Island. From the Peace Park in Hiroshima then to the swamps of the Louisiana Bayou.

The book's text, by renowned author Marianne Wiggins, also includes an interview with Waplington about his extraordinary working methods and the far flung locations he has chosen to photograph. Invoking the spirits of Friedrich Nietzsche, Eugene lonesco, as well as Peter Pan. Wiggins provides a brisk and also insightful counterpoint to Waplington's exceptional imagery. Other Edens integrates personal, cultural, and comic visions to then present an idiosyncratic view of a planet in flux.

Related Links

More books by Nick Waplington here.

More books by Aperture here.

Royal Portraits by Cecil Beaton. It has now an unenviable reputation for its stag and hen parties. A dirty great whorl of debauchery, licentiousness, laughter, vomit, furry handcuffs, fancy dress and drunken oblivion. Born in Hong Kong, she grew up in Canada and studied the piano, the cello as well as medicine. She received her medical degree from the University of Toronto, and practiced family medicine among various First Nations peoples in Canadaʼs North and Pacific Northwest as well as on the other side of the world, in Abu Dhabi and Nepal. Sadly, Elaine Ling passed away in August 2016 after a long illness. One of her last projects was working on Habitación Cubana, her contribution to our One Picture Book series. This vibrant and colorful book comprises seven pairs of photographs made in Cuba on two separate trips: the first in 2002, and then the second in 2015. In each of the pairs, Ling presents a chosen subject in black and white, and again thirteen years later in color. Also, the double layers of time and color create diptychs that can be contemplated endlessly, always with new discoveries to be made. The last pair of images in the book substitutes a signed, original color print in lieu of the reproduction.

Related Links

More books by Elaine Ling here.

Browse our extensive collection of One Picture Books by Nazraeli Press here.

More books by Nazraeli Press here.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/collections/portrait-photography-books-2710705.jpg?v=1773752688
