When I was young, for a very short period I thought it might be “cool” to smoke. I ripped a piece of paper down to the size of a cigarette and pulled some grass from our front lawn and rolled it into the paper and lit it on fire and took a puff. It felt like inhaling shards of glass and I coughed uncontrollably doubled over in pain. My friend’s mother (a smoker herself) said to me, “Yeah, that’s how smoking feels.” And that was enough for me. I was never going to smoke. So when I would see young people smoking I would always marvel at them. They are the ones who wanted to look cool so badly that they overcame the pain of starting smoking. They also overcame the logic of why it’s a bad idea. Since my profession took me all over the world skateboarding, I was always surrounded by young skaters and, inevitably, teenage smokers.

This book Teenage Smokers 2 starts off from where the original book ends. Many are images that could not fit into the original book (published in 1999 by Alleged Press) because that book was small, only 36 pages, and many of the images were Polaroid’s. None of the photos from the original Teenage Smokers book are in this book because I wanted to keep the integrity of the original book intact.

The idea for this book sprang from finding the original boxes of Polaroid’s that started this whole series, shot in 1994 at my local skateboard park in Huntington Beach, California. I would be skating there when the kids finished school and they would collect there to hang out and smoke. One day I brought a Polaroid camera to the park and started asking all of them for a portrait while smoking. Those first Polaroid’s were the photos that Aaron Rose saw when I did an exhibition at his Alleged Gallery in 1999. With the limited money he had we made the original book Teenage Smokers that sold out immediately and is now a collectors’ item. The photos in this book are a continuation of that series that I have been shooting non-stop since ‘94 to the present. This way, it's a project that looks both, backwards and forwards. So, it contains a series that starts with two photographs: The first one is an image from 1950's and it's the photo of a mother. Then, the other photograph comes from archival newspaper. This one was taken by a journalist who was reporting on the aftermath of an auto accident. To conclude, after selecting these two images, Hido put them together. First, he put the portrait at the front of the project. Second, he put the image of the car crash at the back. This way, he started to play with the narrative that would end up connecting both photographs. For this, he used his own archive of portraits and landscapes. As a result, Nymph Daughters is a playful, pulpy tale that takes stories that never happened and knits them together with real tales. Overall, this books is inhabited with the undercurrents and the backgrounds of the people who worked with Hido.

Related Links

So, more books by Todd Hido here.

Also, more books by Super Labo here.

Fujisaki by Bishin Jumonji. I usually shot in monochrome film, but learning the importance of the colors they used, I started using Kodachrome color film. The cost of purchasing Kodachrome was a heavy blow to me, so in the Blitz, I took each and every photograph carefully, ..a select few of them at the core of the movement seemed to be inspiring each other and honing their art, hoping to grow into artists in the future. The punk movement that began in the mid-1970s, and this movement that followed. Perhaps all the British youth back then grew up receiving baptism from and passing through these two movements to a greater or lesser extent. This is why many Brits regard these times in London to be the most culturally stimulating era. Templeton's signature versatility shows through the depictions of the very varied people he takes his eye to.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/files/CityConfesssions2LondonEdTempleton.heic?v=1773335199
123-polaroids
123 Polaroids (2 Cover Options)

123 Polaroids by Lin Zhipeng aka No 223. Lin Zhipeng is a photographer and freelancer writer based in Beijing. Created in 2003, his blog “North Latitude 23” where he published everyday pictures accompanied by short texts received millions views and made him famous among the web community. Presented for ten years in group exhibitions in China and abroad , Lin’s works have also been the object of several solo shows both nationally and internationally ( Delaware Contemporary Museum ; Walther Collection Ulm ; De Sarthe Gallery Beijing ; Stieglitz19 Gallery Antwerp ; M97 Gallery Shanghai, etc). He has published photography books in Taiwan, France, Canada, Japan and Italy. Lin is a leading figure of new Chinese photography emerging in the last decade, popularising his work originally via social media and other online platforms as well as his self-published zines. Lin’s work has come to reflect and define a certain zeitgeist of the post-80’s and 90’s generation of non-mainstream Chinese youth. Naming himself “No. 223” after the police character in Wong Kar-Wai’s movie Chungking Express, Lin also adopts a sense of the Hong Kong director’s poetic and dreamy atmosphere as well as the loneliness and mystery of many of his film’s characters. Lin Zhipeng offers his point of view on an alternative youth spirit and culture in an often conservatively Chinese cultural context.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/products/lin-zhipeng-no-223-123-polaroids-scaled_3c6d48e4-c631-496d-832d-8104dcd96330.jpg?v=1639652259
cotton-mark-cohen-photobooks-setanta-books-new-photography
Cotton

Cotton by Mark Cohen. Goldberg, the youngest son of a wholesale candy distributor, traces his dreams alongside those of his father as he traverses the past through photographic and written montage. The conceptual inspiration comes from his recent remaking of Rich and Poor (Steidl, 2014), in which he examined more thoroughly the influence his early years have had on his work.

The Last Son charts Goldberg’s growth as an artist alongside his father’s acceptance of his own unrealized dreams. The narrative also reads more generally as a story about American perseverance, family dynamics, and the struggle to exceed the expectations of those closest to us. Mixing photographs, collage, handwritten text, and stills from home movies, Goldberg mines his archive to build a narrative of memories beginning with his first photographs taken. The book is a sculptural collection of overflowing pages, offering a palpable interaction with his process of storytelling. Luckily, I was allowed to get inside thanks to the guidance of a friend who was close to them…..Their music made heavy use of synthesizers and abounded in futuristic nuances, coming to define the times by the mid-80s. Indeed, within a few years, many remarkable musicians and artists with a global presence emerged from the young crowd at the Blitz.
