He has some triumphant successes but as always there are mistakes, and he has to keep his wits about him when the more tiresome inventions need conning into being something else. He is a brilliant, mischievous and wily God, brought to life himself in these mesmerizing tales by a master storyteller. Ted Hughes wrote a series of stories for children from the early 1960s through until 1995 about how the world, and the creatures in it, came into being. They are collected together here in one volume for the first time. These are richly told tales of sparkling intensity about animals finding their form, and God's struggle to understand what he has created. Meet the Polar Bear whose obsession with her snowy white fur is so great that she can only live in a landscape surrounded by her own reflection; the Whale, growing in God's garden beside the carrots; King Leo, who began life because God was hungry for his sausages; poor Parrot's painful defeat in the marriage-song contest at the wedding of Man and Woman; and Sparrow's heroic battle against the bird-swallowing Black Hole. There are stories here to suit chidren from four to fourteen, whether for reading aloud or alone.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/files/ted-hughes-the-dream-fighter-front-spine.jpg?v=1787057583
meet-my-folks-3
Meet my Folks!

Meet my Folks! by Ted Hughes

(1990)

Faber and Faber reprint edition

Small format paperback in near fine condition. His most characteristic verse is without sentimentality, emphasizing the cunning and savagery of animal life in harsh, sometimes disjunctive lines. The dialect of Hughes's native West Riding area of Yorkshire set the tone of his verse. At Pembroke College, Cambridge, he found folklore and anthropology of particular interest, a concern that was reflected in a number of his poems. In 1956 he married the American poet Sylvia Plath. The couple made a visit to the United States in 1957, the year that his first volume of verse, The Hawk in the Rain , was published. Other works soon followed. Hughes stopped writing poetry almost completely for almost three years following Plath's suicide in 1963 (the couple had separated earlier). But thereafter he published prolifically, often in collaboration with photographers and illustrators. For example, as in Under the North Star (1981). He wrote many volumes for children, including Remains of Elmet (1979). In which he recalled the world of his childhood. From 1965 he was co-editor of the magazine Modern Poetry in Translation in London. Furthermore, some of Hughes's essays on subjects of literary and cultural criticism were published as Winter Pollen (1994). After decades of silence on the subject of his marriage to Plath, Hughes addressed it in the poems of Birthday Letters (1998). Also, in 1984 he was appointed Britain's poet laureate.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/files/collected-animal-poems-volumes-1-to-4-copy-8701143.jpg?v=1787013646
