For example, with motifs ranging from snapshots of women kissing to closeups of faces to t-shirts with stylized lips to walls covered in rotting advertisement posters (showing lips) to rooms covered in lip photographs.

Artist Bio

Daidō Moriyama is a Japanese photographer, born in 1938 in Osaka. Firstly, he studied photography before moving to Tokyo in 1961. To begin with, he worked as an assistant to Eikoh Hosoe, a Japanese photographer and filmmaker. As a result, he began to produce his own collection of photographs. Afterwards, he ended up depicting the forgotten areas and darker side of cities. Shortly after, Japan Photo-critics awarded him the New Artist Award.

Hence, Moriyama’s images are now known for capturing the breakdown of Japanese tradition. His work captures life during and following the American occupation of Japan after World War II. In particular the effects of industrialisation and the consequential shift in urban life. His images focus on the areas left behind in a rapidly changing city.

He received the Infinity Award for Lifetime Achievement from the International Center of Photography in New York in 2004 as well as the Hasselblad Award in 2019.

Related Links

More books by Daido Moriyama here.

More books by Akio Nagasawa here.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/products/daido-moriyama-lips-lips-lips-e1595502266781.jpg?v=1639151311
inversion-paris-edition
Inversion (Paris Edition)

Inversion (Paris Edition) by Daisuke Yokota. All pages by silk screen printing, everything in a unique edition. Daisuke Yokota's artistic practice consists in reinventing his photography over and over again by repeatedly digging into his own archive images. To give a proper meaning to each creation, the layers of pictures are stacked to form a final photographic object that can be likened to a chamber for "memory layers". The notion of echo and the connections that exist between photography and sounds are also among the paths he explores. While attending the opening of a solo exhibition there, he still managed to find time to wander through the city, exploring iconic locales like the Santa Monica Pier, Beverly Hills, Little Tokyo and downtown. Executed in his typical style of high contrast, grainy black-and-white photographs, these casual snapshots of life in Los Angeles, from the pressing summer crowds to empty back lots and the multilayered reflections in advertising billboards and storefront glass, paint a complex and intimate portrait of the city. He explained to me that, among the snapshots he was taking day by day, there were always images containing eyes somewhere in the streets that caught his attention, and that he ended up shooting without really knowing why. But once he had developed those photos, he would quietly stare at the prints feeling that there was something special about them. So his idea was to collect them in a book that would outline what this series is all about. I didn’t even need to look at the pictures, but hearing about Mr. Suda’s plans alone was enough for me to reply to him that I wanted to do an exhibition of those photos, and publish a book of them.
– Afterword (Excerpt) by Akio Nagasawa

First edition of Northern by Daido Moriyama. While other parts of Japan had entered the rainy season, here the wind just kept blowing for days on end, and the streets and avenues were tinted white instead. Keeping the promise that I had firmly made to myself, I grabbed my camera every morning and took to the streets, with the regularity of an office worker, and no intention to meet any friend or acquaintance. I spent most of these three months on my own. Other than the very basic daily conversations – buying a ticket at the station, ordering a coffee, or making the occasional phone call – I was just keeping my mouth shut. I soon ran out of sleeping pills, and as I didn’t drink, all I could do was spend the long nights reading books. The daily photo shootings weren’t really fruitful, and there I was, sitting in my freezing apartment, at my wit’s end with my progressing mix of depersonalization, aphasia and insomnia. So as, in other words, my lifestyle was from the very onset based on that fawning, illusional idea of escape and isolation, my only justification that was taking photographs, was easily reversed from the true intention that it used to be, to mere pretense. Those days of feeling guilty went by one after another, and before the summer ended, I decided to go back to Tokyo. At the end of the day, I haven’t made any progress whatsoever, but what I do have, as a proof of my endless walks to miscellaneous places, are 250 used rolls of film.
– from afterword by Daido Moriyama

First edition of Pantomime by Daido Moriyama. In each iteration, images both old and new take on changed and newly charged significance. This volume, created during preparations for several international survey exhibitions, offers both the photographer and the viewer the opportunity to consider the photographer’s life work in a fresh light. The author has returned to his contact sheets from the past five decades, selecting previously known images as well as ones never before published. The pages offer reproductions of original contact sheets; sequences of new contact sheets made from recombined negative strips, which juxtapose images from the 1950s with those from the past ten years; and selections of individual images, both familiar and newly discovered. Together, these offer a compact and comprehensive assembly of the artist’s oeuvre, tracing recurring motifs and proposing startling new interpretations of some of his most iconic images. Moriyama has always sought meaning in the raw accumulation and gestalt of sequences of images. Labyrinth: Daido Moriyama makes public an exercise in reconsideration that the photographer has assigned to himself. In opening up this private process of re-examination to a wider public, Moriyama continues to challenge the viewer and his own practice, as well as the larger mechanisms by which photography functions and creates meaning.

First edition of Record by Daido Moriyama. It certainly is a melting pot of people, concrete, steel and glass, but it is at once charged with an indefinable sort of tenderness and sadness. That tenderness and sadness lingers in a quite unique shape inside myself, which is why I sometimes think of the lights of New York like one reminisces about a lover. As I have a severe fear of flying, unfortunately I can't just hop on a plane and fly over to New York whenever I feel like doing so. When I went there last time, I shot 1,500 pictures with my half-frame camera, which ended up locked away mostly without being shown anywhere. It appeared to me that I'd like to try and collect them in an album that's like an album of a lover's pictures, and as Shimizu Gallery offered to provide the setting for the production of that album, my dream finally came true. I keep thinking that, if Tokyo, the place on "this side" that is so close yet at once so irritatingly far, is "my country", then New York is for me a far but familiar place on the other side, or in other words, "another country". - From the original publication from 1974.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/files/another-country-in-new-york-7095612.jpg?v=1781899288
amour
Amour Defendu

First edition, first impression of Amour by Lin Zhipeng.
