Using a large format tripod mounted camera and a unique positive/negative Polaroid film that created both an instant print and a reusable negative, he asked a cross section of the populations of these communities to pose for him, creating a space of self presentation and performance in the streets of the urban environment. As part of every encounter, Bey gave each person a small black-and-white Polaroid print for themselves as a way of reciprocating and returning something to the people who had allowed him to make their portrait. Defying racial stereotypes, the resulting portraits reveal the Black subjects in all of their psychologically rich complexity, presenting themselves openly and intimately to the camera, the viewer, and the world.

Related Links

Books by Dawoud Bey

Books by MACK

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/products/dawoud-bey-street-portraits-scaled_9491a6e8-5ac3-424f-a5a8-68712d3e4703.jpg?v=1639648729
the-woman-in-the-light-harlem-new-york-1980
The Woman in the Light, Harlem, New York. 1980.

Specifications for all available Prints

6" x 6" Magnum Square print

Fuji Crystal Archival Matte paper

Signed by Dawoud Bey

Mint condition

About Dawoud Bey

Dawoud Bey is an American photographer, artist and educator known for his large-scale art photography and street photography portraits, including American adolescents in relation to their community, and other often marginalized subjects.

First edition (2019)

First impression

Medium format softback in new condition

In the fifth installment of The Photography Workshop Series, Dawoud Bey—well known for striking portraits that reflect both the individual and their larger community—offers his insight on creating meaningful and beautiful portraits that capture the subject and speak to something more universal. Aperture Foundation works with the world’s top photographers to distill their creative approaches to, teachings on, and insights into photography—offering the workshop experience in a book. At first these visits were just weekly excursions. On those occasions much of what I did was not photographing, but spending time walking the streets, reacquainting myself with the neighborhood that I wanted to again become a part of, seeing up close the people and the neighborhood I had glimpsed from the car window years before as a child. As I got to know the shopkeepers and others in the neighborhood, I became a permanent fixture at the public events taking place in the community, such as block parties, tent revival meetings, and anyplace else where people gathered. The relationships and exchanges that I had with some of these people are experiences I will never forget. It is in those relationships and the lives of the people that these pictures recall that the deeper meaning of these photographs can be found.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/files/dawoud-bey-harlem-usa-portfolio-5283249.jpg?v=1781900676
picturing-people
Picturing People

Picturing People by Dawoud Bey

(2012)

First Edition.
