Prominent on her streets were the lavish movie palaces. First appearing in the 1920s, that were emblematic of the immense popularity of the movies and the importance of the movie industry to the economy of Southern California. The architects of the early movie theaters believed that the movie-going experience began on the sidewalk in front of the building where the movies were viewed. The box offices were the tiny stand-alone structure where tickets were sold. The elaborate little buildings, occupied by one or two ticket sellers, provided a preview to the opulent decoration of the interior, and reflected its style. She received her medical degree from the University of Toronto, and practiced family medicine among various First Nations peoples in Canadaʼs North and Pacific Northwest as well as on the other side of the world, in Abu Dhabi and Nepal. Sadly, Elaine Ling passed away in August 2016 after a long illness. One of her last projects was working on Habitación Cubana, her contribution to our One Picture Book series. This vibrant and colorful book comprises seven pairs of photographs made in Cuba on two separate trips: the first in 2002, and then the second in 2015. In each of the pairs, Ling presents a chosen subject in black and white, and again thirteen years later in color. The regions I photographed between are some of the least populated in the United States. In rural Nevada, there are still twice as many cows as there are people. While the ranchers I met were struggling to survive the economic recession and years of drought, almost anyone could get a job at the mines. Coal, oil, natural gas, and gold were booming. Ranching and mining in the American West have had parallel histories and a common landscape. Cowboys and ranching culture are the chosen representatives of the region. Men on horseback ride through countless movies.

Their images are printed on license plates and tourist souvenirs. But, the biggest profits are in mining. Though miners haven’t found any raw nuggets for generations, the American West remains one of the largest gold producing regions in the world. Companies are digging increasingly bigger holes to find smaller deposits, leaving pits where there once were mountains. When I first visited, I expected cowboys to be nomads, herding animals on the edge of wilderness. I quickly learned that most ranchers have homes with mortgages. I also learned that all mines close eventually. When a mine closes, the land is scarred. The company leaves and people have to move. First, if one makes a group of photographs in an environment based on the simple rule that a dog and man must be in each frame, a casual description of the surrounding environment will result. And second, if we accept that one year in a dog’s life is the equivalent of seven for a human, a man might reasonably expect a life seven dogs long.

Artist Bio

Divola was born in 1949 in Los Angeles, CA. Here, we wandered among the quiet dark tract housing, devoid of people, finally lying down together on a rectangle of grass wedged between the sidewalk and the street. We stared up at the stars talking until the sun came up.” – Deanna Templeton Contemporary Suburbium is a photographic meditation on living in the suburbs of Orange County, California — specifically, Huntington Beach, a seaside town on the outer extremities of the population surrounding Los Angeles. Once dotted with orange trees, oil drilling and summer cottages for the rich, Huntington Beach is now a popular beach destination for vacationers, and the old cottages are being replaced with tall modern three-story houses. The photographs in this book are a look at the people of this traditionally conservative stronghold, the disaffected youth, the fortunate (and less fortunate), as they venture out from behind fences, walls, and endless blocks of tract housing.

Related Links

More books by Ed Templeton and Deanna Templeton.

More books by Nazraeli Press here.

Six by XX with contributions from:

- Catherine Opie

- Lalla Essaydi

- Laurie Simmons

- Marilyn Minter

- Mickalene Thomas

- Petra Collins

This is number 53/100 in a set of six oversized books each with a signed, numbered 11 x 14 inch exhibition quality print. Paris was where his mother was born and raised, giving Steinmetz a special connection to, and familiarity with, the city. As a result, Steinmetz plays with the conventions of the Paris photographic tradition, from Atget to Kertész. Therefore the pictures are classical, with a modern feel. Consequently Steinmetz updates the tradition and follows the path he has set with his other books.

Artist Bio

Claiming, “I am more interested in a photography that collaborates with chance events,” Mark Steinmetz has been courting chance since the mid-1980s, keenly observing people and places and capturing them in disarming moments of humor, tenderness, and beauty. Working in series, he has concentrated on such subjects as kids and teenagers, small American towns, summer camp, schoolteachers, and street scenes in Paris and various Italian cities. Though he has worked in color, he concentrates primarily on black-and-white. While most other photographers embrace digital technologies, Steinmetz remains committed to film and to making his own prints in a darkroom, and has been using the same cameras, film, and chemicals throughout his career. “I have a strong emotional response to light and I insist that my prints convey this,” he explains, “so I still rely on film and silver paper.”

Related Links

More books by Mark Steinmetz here.

More books by Nazraeli Press here.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/products/paris-in-my-time-with-a-limited-edition-print-6162015.jpg?v=1787027127
the-audience
The Audience (One Picture Book)

The Audience by Roger Ballen. Furthermore, we see them on the field and in the dugout, focused on the game and lost in their own worlds. Made between 1986 and 1990, the photographs are classic Steinmetz because they present tenderness, humour, and humanism. As well as Steinmetz’s exquisite use of natural light and attention to poetic detail.

From the Introduction by Anne Tucker

“The kids in Steinmetz’s photographs are ages 6 to 13, with a few older boys. Steinmetz must remember how awkward and uncoordinated bodies that age can be. His empathy is evident throughout the series. Most of these kids are too young to have the grace, skill or concentration required and are too green to experience the sheer pleasure of knowing they are good, maybe really good, ballplayers in an unforgiving sport. These kids run into each other in pursuit of a fly ball. Hope drives their swings more than their awareness of the art of hitting...Steinmetz concentrates less on the players in the field than those outside the base lines who are waiting to play, or cooling off. He observes the managers as well as the spectators who love the game or one of the players, or who just have a free afternoon. He sees “high fives” as well as the “what were you thinking” moments. His photographs have all the skill and grace lacking in the players.”

Related Links

More books by Mark Steinmetz here.

More books by Nazraeli Press here.

The Painter's Pool by Jem Southam. Made between 1984 and 1991, when kids and teenagers were able to roam their neighborhoods with less supervision than today, riding bikes without wearing helmets, and hanging out without constant digital interruptions, these black and white photographs capture the light and feel of an endless summer.

Pine Valley by Robert Adams. Most of the pines have been cut, but it is still an oasis. In the morning and also evening there are quail, “sweet-whistling quail”. As Anne Porter called them. The quail walk near the house in lines of family. – Robert Adams This is a book about a place at once alive and serene. Robert Adams had been photographing the cut over remains of northwestern forests when one day, near Hell’s Canyon, he came upon a valley of unaccountable promise. The pines for which the valley was named had been mostly logged-off, but cottonwoods and fruit trees had grown up since then. “In the high desert light the new trees reminded me of what originally brought me to photography – beauty. As simple as that.” Born in 1937, Robert Adams has worked as a photographer of the changing American landscape for the past three decades. His photographs are included in dozens of books, and housed in most major photography collections throughout the United States and Europe. It is a sensible standard, though by it the Denver area in the 1970s was a disappointment. People had moved there to enjoy nature, but found that nature was mostly inaccessible except on weekends. Often little of it was even visible out the window. The puzzle then became how to live inside. These rooms seemed to me then to be mostly sad, although what strikes me now is the evidence in them, however fragile, of caring." Also, from the publisher: "Robert Adams recently came across a group of 24 pictures he made in Denver in the early 1970s. These photographs, which informed his later work, are published here for the first time. As a result we are pleased to present her first monograph to be published outside of Japan. The artist represents herself as an alchemist of images and also a catalyst for daydreams and desires. As a result, the vignettes of jigsaw puzzle-like shots of herself and others blur the boundaries between documentary and staged photography. So, posing naked, clothed, or partially dressed, she takes a uniquely obsessive interest in her own body. Her legs, arms, hands, toes, lips and hair create arresting compositions and erotic ambiance. When she focuses on the opposite sex, it results in equally surprising elaborations on the male anatomy. This obsession with the human body at its most intimate is a result, in part, from her long periods spent hospitalized: after graduating from art school in Tokyo in the mid-1980s, Anrakuji suffered a cerebral tumor that prevented her from making art for more than a decade. During her gradual recovery, she began to make block prints, then photographs. Alternating between the slightly strange and fantastic, Zadeh’s seductive and unsettling imaginary landscapes prerecord the soft submersion of Holland into the seas while also serving as a sort of personal diary. “Forever daydreaming after 37 years of living in Amsterdam, it was about time to make this village mine,” the artist writes. The result, an ongoing photographic series of more than 500 images, formed the source for Drowned in a Dream, the first monograph devoted exclusively to Zadeh’s work. Persian by ancestry and birth, Zadeh moved to France as a child, and then to Holland as a teenager. She has lived in Amsterdam ever since. Originally trained as a classical dancer, after a 12-year career at the Dutch National Ballet in Amsterdam she turned to photography and publishing. In Floridadogs, Mendoza presents a series of photographs he made one afternoon of beach-loving canines that he and his dog Bob encountered during an impromptu visit to the dog beach at Fort De Soto Park in Florida. Known for his sharp wit and great sense of humor, Mendoza delivers in spades with this glimpse into a secret society of ocean- and beach loving dogs.

Miners are the modern-day nomads, following jobs across the country."

This edition of Frontcountry comes with a signed and numbered print. There is a school of thought whose argument is that we should protect those natural spaces and put barriers around them. However, there is a counter-argument on the radical conservationist side that defends that our impact in nature is limited, we can't really change nature, so instead of separating human and nature, we should make our cities greener and more sustainable. As a result, we can learn to live with and respect nature, to be a part of it and not its owner. Lucas Foglia set out on a mission to see what certain individuals are doing to protect our futures, as well as ensuring we can share and enjoy our planet for longer. Human Nature is the resulting monograph of this mission. Each chapter uses a different location; spanning from all different types of ecosystems, from deserts to rainforests. Throughout the book we are provided with hope for the future of our planet, and that we can preserve as well as live alongside nature - even if this means living in natural spaces made by human beings.

Related Links

So, more books by Lucas Foglia you can find here. Also, more books by Nazraeli Press here.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/products/human-nature-with-signed-numbered-print-2326577.jpg?v=1787025991
jgs-witness-number-seven
JGS: Witness Number Seven

JGS: Witness Number Seven by Todd Hido. Teemer’s photographs examine the ways in which neighborhoods and urban infrastructure have been shaped by the industry that surrounds them. His pictures quietly celebrate the ways in which humans strive to live together. Even in the shadow of manufacturing—even in its decline. Cinematic vistas, presenting a wide view of a city’s urban structure, set the stage for pictures that focus more narrowly on neighborhoods and individual yards. So, bridges and freeways loom over homes and restaurants. Fences surround each home; signs, automobiles and gardens crowd each yard; children jump from porches and play with hoses. Although many of these yards have seen better days. Despite this, the diverse residents of communities who call them home cultivate and enliven their small plots of land. As a result, Teemer records these distinctive American Rust Belt stories, from the cities on the verge of economic and civic recovery to the families who live boisterously in close quarters, with great care for the human experience.

Related Links

More books by Jack Teemer here.

Browse more books from our large collection of the NZ Library books here.

More books by Nazraeli Press here.

Mantis by Daido Moriyama. As well as literally hundreds of exhibitions mounted around the world during the past three decades. His subjects are often sprawling, both geographically and metaphorically, with one influencing the next. In Mantis, however, the act of photographing becomes the subject of the book, decades after the fact. In this beautifully produced artist’s book, Moriyama presents 21 frames printed as full-bleed enlargements, all from one contact sheet with an imprinted date of 1987.

The book is divided into three unintended chapters, the result of Daido having photographed one subject until his was satisfied, moving on to the next, and then repeating this once more. The book opens, fantastically, with a close-up of the hand of Masahisa Fukase, the artist’s friend and contemporary, holding a praying mantis which has caught the attention of them both; after several frames, Moriyama abruptly stops and then continues the roll of film inside of a studio apartment elsewhere. A Pontiac GTO with a four-speed stick and a Hurst shifter and three Rochester 2G carburetors. He then drove Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles to begin his new advertising agency job. Gassing up one day at Nobo’s Shell station at Beverly and Larchmont. Banks learned that Nobo had previously been head mechanic at the Courtesy Chevrolet dealership, and that his station had become a center for building and tuning street racers. On and off over the next few months, Banks would leave his car at the garage while Nobo fine-tuned the carburetors.

They replaced the stock tires, torsion, and sway bars, and added Koni shocks and a Sun tachometer. Next, he taught Banks how to ‘speed shift’—while making late night runs up and down Larchmont Boulevard. One day, Nobo mentioned he was going to a drag race that Saturday, and that Banks was welcome to come along. Witnessing his first drag race, Steve Banks was immediately hooked. He returned the following Saturday, and the next, and again the next; but this time with with his cameras. Over the course of two years, Banks photographed guys preparing runs, the thundering nitro-burning dragsters launching down the strip at two hundred-plus miles per hour, and everything else that moved.

Related Links

Books by Steve Banks

The rest of the collection of NZ Library books

More books by Nazraeli Press

Image Music Text by Idris Kahn. Whether it is Beethoven’s symphony, Milton’s Paradise Lost, or Bernd and Hilla Becher’s stylized sculpture of water towers. Image Music Text presents a selection of Khan’s most potent imagery to date. Reveling the intimacy of a book’s presentation while taking full advantage of the series’s generous format. So the black and white photographs in this book comprise a series of subject groupings which, pulled together, show early manifestations of the deadpan humor and the ability to capture everyday scenes wrapped in loneliness, for which Divola is now well-known. At this time Sage Sohier was a young photographer living in Boston. Firstly, Sohier writes in her introduction. “In that pre-digital and less paranoid era, families — and especially children and teenagers — used to hang out in their neighbourhoods. A kind of theatre of the streets emerged from the boredom of hot summer days and it was a great time to photograph people outside. Undoubtedly my own childhood afternoons, often spent in my neighbour’s basement creating theatrical productions with the four kids who lived there, helped to form my vision of the play of children as a kind of rite or performance.

That our audience was comprised of our dogs never discouraged us.” So, over the next seven years, Sohier made portraits of people living in Boston’s many working-class and ethnic neighbourhoods. As well as in the towns she visited each summer during her annual road trips: one through small town Pennsylvania via dilapidated Newburgh, New York, another to mining areas in rural West Virginia, and once to Mormon enclaves in Utah and Idaho. During long Boston winters, Sohier would head south and photograph in the citrus-producing regions of inland Florida, or through the Florida panhandle to New Orleans and Cajun country.

Related Links

More books by Sage Sohier

Browse more books from our large collection of NZ Library books

Books by Nazraeli Press

Yosemite by Cathrine Opie. Indeed, when she does step back and present a wider view of the vista she is facing, she pulls it out of focus, allowing for a moment of reflection before moving on to the next photograph. “Like the Romantic painters before her, Opie expresses a desire to return to nature for quiet contemplation. She does not ask for much; she would probably photograph anything ‘so long as they are wild.’ While pointing at the beauty of these sights, she makes a subtle plea for environmental preservation: if society goes on operating in such an unsustainable manner, all of this is what we are poised to lose.” — Art Asia Pacific

Related Links

So, more books by Cathrine Opie here.

Browse more books from our large collection of the NZ Library books here.

More books by Nazraeli Press here.

Hundreds of Sparrows Volume One by Katy Grannan. In his preface to the work, Steinmetz describes living in a studio apartment in the Miracle Mile district. Complete with a futon surrounded by a dozen roach motels and a makeshift darkroom set up in a tiny nook off of the bathroom. It didn’t take long before he ran into Garry Winogrand. He enabled Winogrand to photograph through the car window while Steinmetz navigated the streets of his new home town. Viewed together in book form, the 58 photographs presented in Angel City West document Steinmetz finding his own voice as an artist. As a result, they are provocative and haunting, they were the subject of solo exhibitions on the West Coast and in Europe during that decade and included in noted group exhibitions such as Exposing: Photographic Definitions at the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art in 1976 and The Altered Photograph at P.S.1 in New York in 1979. The series divides into two groups of pictures. The Hollywood Suites (nudes) features sexually charged pictures of young women, often partially clad and sometimes cropped. In The Hollywood Suites (mirrors, windows and doors), Kahn concentrated on architectural interiors, making arresting use of windows and doors. The images themselves are grainy and offer an unnaturally sharp contrast between darks and lights. Select examples feature doorways embellished with geometric patterns done in twine.

Related Links

More books by Steve Kahn here.

Browse more books from our large collection of the NZ Library books here.

More books by Nazraeli Press here.

Discarded by Anthony Hernandez. Capitalism, of course, is built on optimism and growth, but just as central to its being is failure. We can’t all be winners; bust inevitably follows boom. While some initiatives survive, others go under, abandoned to the banks and discarded to the scourges of time and happenstance. The subject offers pathos and also an enticing undercurrent of violence. But where others generally embrace the romance of the struggle against the harsh climate, emphasizing isolation and self-sufficiency, Hernandez reminds us of the essentialness of community in these rough places.”

Related Links

So, more books by Anthony Hernandez here.

Browse more books from our large collection of the NZ Library books here.

More books by Nazraeli Press here.
