The images show the stillness of late afternoon as the starlings fly in to roost. As the book progresses, thousands of birds are shown in full flight before disappearing with the coming of darkness.

It is thought that up to a million starlings roost at the Avalon Marshes at Ham Wall. Some of the birds inhabit the marshes year-round, and others migrate from colder countries in continental Europe as northern winter descends and contribute to this staggering number of birds. During the day they travel up to 20 miles to feed and return in the afternoon, an hour or so before sunset. Southam’s photographs capture the spectacle of the starling flocks populating the sky before flying down to roost for the night, leaving the skies empty once more.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/files/starlings-with-signed-print-9984272.jpg?v=1773754010
the-white-wood
The White Wood

First edition of The White Wood by Andrew Nadolski (2026)

First impression

Large format hardback in new condition

Signed by Andrew Nadolski to the inside title page

84 pages

About

The White Wood is a photographic study of an ancient woodland valley on the edge of Dartmoor, exploring how a landscape reveals its complexity through time, repeated observation and experience. Created over more than a decade within an area of less than one square mile, the work moves beyond the search for a single defining landscape image to examine the relationships between trees, granite, the River Dart and the unseen ecological systems beneath the forest floor. At the same time, the valley becomes a place of memory and myth, inviting questions about human history, mortality and our enduring need to understand the landscapes we inhabit.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0592/2593/1985/files/the-white-wood-andrew-nadolski-cover.heic?v=1792681556
