Statement from Matt Black on the back of print "Cattle auction. Alturas, California, USA. 2016."

"As I have traveled across the US, I have seen people determined to live their lives, even in the face of diminished opportunities and a fading American Dream. Those in power seek to divide us, but dreams can be restored and their realization no longer deferred."

Artist Bio

Matt Black is an American documentary photographer. His work focuses on issues of poverty, migration, and the environment. Black has received numerous awards. For instance, a World Press Photo Award, the Robert F. Kennedy Award for Excellence in Journalism and the W. Eugene Smith Grant. And now, he is a full member of Magnum Photos. Black is from California’s Central Valley. It is a rural, agricultural area in the heart of the state. He started photography working at his hometown newspaper. After that, he initiated a series of long-term, personal projects. In these projects, Black explored the social and environmental themes that shaped life in his home region. Which is one of the poorest in the US.

When Matt was nominated to Magnum Photos in 2015, he also began travelling across the U.S. During this time, he photographed other marginalized areas throughout the country. Consequently, this work covered over 100,000 miles and comprised his project American Geography. Other works include The Dry Land and The Monster in the Mountains. The first is about the impact of drought on California’s agricultural communities. And the second is about the disappearance of 43 students in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero. Both of these projects, accompanied by short films, were published by The New Yorker.
