Statement from Bruce Gilden on the back of print "New York City, USA. 1990."

"I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the expressions on the faces of these two seemingly related women as the younger one was pushing the other along Madison Avenue in her wheelchair. Whatever the reason, her mouth was wide open. The scene spoke to me about the mother-daughter relationship: I imagined that the daughter had had enough and was perilously pushing the older woman over a cliff."

Artist Bio

Bruce Gilden is an American street photographer. He is best known for his candid close-up photographs of people on the streets of New York City. He has had various books of his work published. Also, he has received the European Publishers Award for Photography and is a Guggenheim Fellow. Bruce Gilden is an Iconic street photographer with a unique style. He was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1946. He first went to Penn State University but he found his sociology courses too boring for his temperament. So, he quit college. Gilden then briefly toyed with the idea of being an actor but in 1967, he decided to buy a camera and become a photographer. Gilden is substantially considered as a self taught photographer. Even though he did attend some evening classes at the school of Visual Arts in New York.
