Toshio Shibata

Toshio Shibata is a Japanese photographer known for his large-format photographs of large-scale works of civil engineering in unpopulated landscapes. Shibata was born in Tokyo. He graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts with a B.A. in 1972. Then in 1974, he obtained an M.F.A., in which he concentrated primarily on painting.

Toshio Shibata is one of Japan’s most respected contemporary photographers. Moreover, his work is the subject of exhibitions and publications throughout Japan, the United States, and Europe. Furthermore, it is part of in such public collections as The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
