About Sammallahti

Sammallahti’s heart stoppingly beautiful photographs depict life as shown through more innocent creatures, particularly dogs. This form suggests the possibility of another, more primal, understanding of the universe.

Artist Bio

Pentti was born on 29 April 1950 in Helsinki, Finland. Growing up, he was surrounded by the works of his grandmother, a Swedish born photographer. She also worked for the Helsinki newspaper Kaiku in the early 1900s. After visiting the exhibition The Family of Man at the Helsinki Art Hall (1961) Pentti made his first photographs, at age eleven. After that, he joined the Helsinki Camera Club in 1964. His first solo exhibition was in 1971.

From 1974 to 1991 Pentti taught at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki. However, he retired when he received a 15-year grant from the Finnish government. This is an unusually long endowment and is no longer awarded. Both as a photographer and a teacher, he has had an enormous influence on a whole generation of documentary photographers in Scandinavia.
