Here, Sawada presents twelve self portraits, with each one showing her made up as a different ethnicity and cultural background. Her work also has a very serious underlying message. In her own words, “All people are essentially and naturally equal human beings. Despite having different types of so called “added values” such as nationality, race, religion, and language. This idea then underlies my photographic work. So, I aim to point people euphemistically to the fact that humans share 99.99999% of the same genes.”
So, Tomoko Sawada is one of the most recognizable artists of her generation. She is a Japanese contemporary feminist photographer. As well as performance artist. She has been included in numerous group shows in Japan, Europe and also the US. Her first solo exhibition was in 1997 at Japan’s Gallery Chat. Then, in 2004 she was awarded the prestigious Kimura Ihei Memorial Photography Award for Young Japanese Photographer. As well as the International Center of Photography Infinity Award in the category of Young Photographer.
