About Adventures in the Nearby Away
In Adventures in the Nearby Away, Templeton takes us 26 miles across the Pacific Ocean into a beautiful island called Santa Catalina. This place is a paradise-like little island that seems to have become a time capsule. It’s almost like time never moved forward.
Templeton has been visiting this island since he was a boy and in this book, he documents its beauty as well as the people who go explore it. The photographs have been shot in film and they span all the way back to the late 1990’s.
About Ed Templeton
Ed Templeton is an American professional skateboarder, contemporary artist, and photographer. He is the founder of the skateboard company, Toy Machine, a company that he continues to own and manage. He is based in Huntington Beach, California. Templeton was inducted into the Skateboard Hall of Fame in 2016.
“Depending on what hat I’m wearing, I’m a skateboarder, an artist, or a businessman,” says Ed Templeton, who produces photographs, paintings, and drawings. He began skateboarding in 1985 and went on to found his own skateboard company and to skate professionally from the early to mid-1990s. In 1994, he picked up a camera to document the skateboarder subculture he was a part of—and began his artistic career. Though he is primarily known for his black-and-white photographs of the people and street life of Huntington Beach, Calif., his work also includes a series of intimate portraits of his wife and an understated suite of paintings focused on suburbia. As the artist explains, all of his subjects come from his own life: “Everything I’ve ever shot has just been on the path that I’ve been on, be it skating or travel or street photography.”
