About Black is Beautiful
Thomas builds stunning collage-like images full of colour. The subjects are portrayed in complex compositions where the artist merges materials, textures, sensuality, beauty and power.
Thomas’ work includes images of African-American women of the seventies. She uses images from the pin-up calendars from the 1970’s called Jet: Beauties of the Month. These were advertised as the first “black is beautiful” calendars. They were a spin-off from the weekly Jet magazine. Its Wikipedia page describes its weekly content thus:
The result is a striking project that celebrates the beauty and femininity of black women, so often dismissed or ignored.
About Mickalene Thomas
So, Mickalene Thomas is a modern African American visual artist. She is best known for works using rhinestones, acrylic, as well as enamel. She (lives and works in Brooklyn, NY) makes paintings, collages, photography, video, and also installations. They draw on art history and popular culture to create a contemporary vision of female sexuality, beauty, and power. Blurring the distinction between object and subject. Concrete and abstract. Real and imaginary. Thomas constructs complex portraits, landscapes, and interiors in order to examine how identity, gender, and sense of self are informed by the ways women (and “feminine” spaces) are represented in art and popular culture.
