Cambodia continues to pay the price of these decades of conflict including with the deadly hidden threat of landmines, which kill and injure dozens of people each year. Since the early 1990s, the government’s Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) has trained de-miners and cleared landmines from large swathes of the country. Working in conjunction with U.S. non-profit the Golden West Humanitarian Foundation, formed first elite salvage diving unit. Their job – to tackle the underwater menace from those years of conflict, the unknown number of bombs and unexploded ordnance (UXO) that litter Cambodia’s waterways and rivers.
Over a 4 year period, Charles photographed the team, from their first training dives to the removal of 500 lb bombs dropped on Cambodia during the Vietnam war. With words by journalist Abby Seiff, Bomb Divers is revealing one of the final pushes to eradicate this legacy of conflict.
