Renovation work had endangered parts of the famous “Block Beuys” (1970-1986): Beuys friends from all over the world revolted when the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt announced that they would not exclude the extensive installation from the planned renovation of the museum. Especially changes of the wall templates and floor coverings encountered resistance. Joseph Beuys himself never commented on the texture of the walls and floors and did not name their significance for the work of art. That’s why the controversy over the renovation work was so intense. Shortly before the Darmstadt Museum closed in September 2007, Tacita Dean began with her work: she filmed down to the smallest detail the carpets and wallpapers of the seven rooms in which the installations of the »Block Beuys« are located, without ever looking at the installations themselves. In close cooperation with Gerhard Steidl, she extended her filmic Beuys homage to the artist book Darmstädter Werkblock.
