About Fire: February 6
Fire: February 6 (One Picture Book #13) documents one of the artist’s home town celebrations, the annual Shingu Fire Festival. Firstly, gathered at night in the Kannokura shrine, participants kindle a single flame. From which each light pine torches. As a result, they descend the stone steps, creating a river of fire in the evening sky. So, the torches are then taken to each home in the community and used to rekindle fires. Therefore, signifying regeneration as the winter draws to a close.
Risaku Suzuki is one of Japan’s most up and coming photographic artists. Therefore, his work has been published and exhibited widely in Japan, Asia, Europe and the United States. In 1998, he published his first photographic book, KUMANO (Korinsha Press). Which looked at his native Kumano region of Japan. KUMANO took the form of a narrative sequence, as did his PILES OF TIME (Korinsha Press), published in the following year.
