In Sakura (which means cherry blossom in Japanese) Yoshinori Mizutani brings us the overwhelming yet simple beauty of this emblematic tree, so symbolic and relevant in Japanese culture. They represent the renewal of life and its fleeting nature. In this work of contemplative appreciation, the photographer experiments with motion, layered images, long exposure and colours, creating an intriguing and beautiful mood.
As a result, we dip into Mizutani’s vision as he studies and experiences the blossoms, from one petal to another, visiting every angle and side. Besides, the design of this book is in itself a work of beauty, helping Mizutani’s photographs transition from one to another seamlessly and creating a soothing, wandering effect for the viewer. This way, we are transported to the specific moment each photography was captured, but also, we’re experiencing the passing of time.
Overall, Sakura gracefully showcases Mizutani’s interest in exploring nature and its wonders in his very personal and playful manner. As a sort of dream, the pages on this book are filled with beautiful colours and tranquil images, often blurred or over-layered, creating a soft movement that wraps the viewer inside.
