Shinan, an archipelago of 1,004 exquisite and unspoiled islands situated in the South West of Korea, is also known as “The Island of Angels”. Michael Kenna photographed there over a period of two years. So, his resulting monograph, “Shinan”, is comprised of sixty-two black and white images in which the artist emphasizes suggestion rather than description. Furthermore, sparse and graphic elements evoke a whole world. Elegantly printed with “Daido black” ink and tinted spot varnish on Japanese matte art paper, the first printing is also limited to 3,000 slipcased copies.
So, this monograph presents images distinctive to Kenna’s style. Although, the images depict foreign land. As a result, we are transported to this strange photographic landscape which Kenna so brilliantly captures.
Michael Kenna (b.1953) was born in Widnes, England, and is best known for his unusual photographs of black and white landscapes. Firstly, he was a student at the London College of Printing. Afterwards, he began working as an artist and a photographer. He is now very well established.
