About Bastard Countryside

Bastard Countryside collects together 15 years worth of exploration within the British landscape. It dwells on what Victor Hugo called the ‘bastard countryside’: “somewhat ugly but bizarre, made up of two different natures”. Friend’s large-format colour images scrutinise these in-between, unkempt, and often surreal marginal areas of the country. Also, they highlight frictions between the pastoral sublime and the discarded, often polluted reality of the present.

Starting from a classical landscape tradition, Friend’s meticulous 5×4 photographs are given heightened effect through exaggerations of colour and composition. Furthermore, they embody friction between British pastoral ideals and present reality. In particular, Friend follows moments in which the expected narrative of the landscape is rudely interrupted. For example, often through leakage, pollution, or the wreckage and containment of nature.

In his accompanying essay, writer Robert Macfarlane describes Bastard Countryside as “a vision par excellence of our synthetic ‘modern nature’– produced by assemblage and entanglement rather than purity and distinction”. Contained within Friend’s photographs are “hard questions […] about what kinds of landscape one might wish either to pass through or to live in; about what versions of ‘modern nature’ might be worth fighting for, and why.”

Thames Log

Thames Log by Chloe Dewe Mathews. First edition (2021). First impression. Large format paperback with French flaps in new condition. No markings. This is a brand new book. Please see pictures. PayPal accepted, any questions please get in touch.

About Thames Log

This book examines the ever changing nature of our relationship to water. From ancient pagan festivities through to the rituals of modern life.

Dewe Mathews spent five years photographing up and down the River Thames, from its puddling source to its great estuarial mouth. She focuses her attention on lives that overlap with the river but whose activities often go unnoticed. Like ship spotters, who log the continual stream of vessels that pass through Tilbury. As well as mudlarks, who comb the city sludge for Roman and Saxon treasure. Above the tidal Thames, which transforms the landscape twice daily, the young river meanders gently through the verdant countryside. There, Dewe Mathews encounters neopagan rituals, eccentric coracle builders, and the custodians of royal swans. Far from holding a fixed identity, the Thames becomes a protagonist in a series of ceremonies and practices that flow seamlessly downstream, from boat burning in Oxford to evening prayer in Southend; from mass baptisms to teenage rites of passage.

Despite its status as one of the most iconic and well documented rivers in the world, the Thames documented by Dewe Mathews invites you to look beyond the river to consider religious and secular rituals, and how meaning and identity are constructed through practices both big and small, private and public. For some, the Thames represents a source from which to dream, or imagine other places, other rivers – the Volga, Congo, Ganges, Arcadia. For others, it will represent a final point of departure, as their ashes are scattered into its flow.

About Song Flowers

Firstly, Jack Davison’s Song Flowers is a new body of work; made in collaboration with Marni. His work is renowned, above all, for its dexterity, soulfulness and also human spirit.

So, the Miao are one of the oldest ethnic groups in China and are globally renowned for their intricately handmade clothing and patterns. As well as imaginative local festivals and myths. As a key inspiration for Marni, Davison was invited by Francesco Risso to spend time in the pace of life and creativity of these rural communities. Therefore, Jack photographed everything from weavers to children, animals, cities and nature. Moreover, the lush tones of Davison’s work creates an interconnectivity between landscape and development, or between tradition and modernity. However; Davison’s images preoccupy themselves with the backdrops, workshops, faces and hands that shape Miao culture. In conclusion, Song Flowers eschews the intricate and grandiose to look at the intimate and everyday.

Ensemble

The photography book cover of Ensemble by David Luraschi. In softcover black and white.

Ensemble by David Luraschi. First edition (2021). First impression. Large format paperback in new condition. No markings. This is a new book. Please see pictures. PayPal accepted, any questions please get in touch.

About Ensemble

David Luraschi’s Ensemble is a gradual, sensual yet tender series. In which bodies mingle, fuse, and eventually are absorbed by the landscape that surrounds them. Luraschi evokes the spirit of the windswept Provençal wetlands of the Camargue: Europe’s largest river delta. To the west of Marseille and also south of Arles, an area of salt flats known for its wildness. Untamed by nature, flat and desolate, but punctuated with myths, vagabond settlers, flamingoes and wild horses. Luraschi builds on this wildness with his choreographed nudes, interlocked beyond individuality. Always turned from the camera, fused in an oblique embrace; charged, tender, uncomfortable, intimate yet anonymous.

As is typical of Luraschi’s practice, these images are the result of collaboration and friendship – between the artist, designer Simon Porte Jacquemus, who commissioned the work, and dancers Claire Tran and Paul Girard. To celebrate the opening of Loose Joints’ bookshop in Marseille, also titled Ensemble, we are thrilled to present this exclusive publication. Released in a limited run and also available principally in person at the bookstore.

About Photographs

A self-taught photographer, Davison makes pictures like a painter paints. In other words, he uses intuition and instinct to craft photographs. His photographs excavate the surreal and sensual from the fabric of daily life. Above all, Davison relies heavily on chiaroscuro and the power of photography to obscure as well as reveal. His unique, crafted approach to image-making oscillates from crisp, sharp details into dissolving mirages – the world inverted and submerged.

So, with their deep shadows and tight framing, the images in Photographs have an unmistakeably cinematic quality. Furthermore, each layered image leaves a breadcrumb trail of associations that extend far beyond it’s initial context. However, despite Jack’s recent successes, he remains humble and all-encompassing in his photography. And the book indistinguishably shifts from staged, meticulous editorial setups to simple everyday occurrences, infused with mystery and depth.

Two recurring motifs in Davison’s work are the hand and the eye: here a clenched fist, there caressing a face. Here glaring out from a billboard and elsewhere shimmering in a reflection. They represent a dynamic tension within Davison’s work. The one of seeing versus feeling, or the threshold between perception and imagination. In conclusion, the delicate sequence in Photographs hovers between these two states. It creates a complex, soulful interpretation of the world through Jack’s enigmatic portraits, landscapes and still lifes.

Amen Break

Amen Break by Thomas Prior. First edition (2020). Firs impression. Large format paperback in new condition. No markings. This is a brand new book. Please see pictures. PayPal accepted, any questions please get in touch.

About Amen Break

Amen Break is the name of  is a drum break that has been widely sampled and has become the stable of drum and bass and jungle music. In this broadsheet newspaper-style project, Prior turns his camera into a time when New York finally went to sleep: 2020.

So, Prior’s distinctive documentary style took him around the streets of a city that never looked so still and quiet before, observing the uncanny lack of the normal ‘hustle and bustle’. This way,  Amen Breaks takes us into a New York that looks different without the usual noises, the people and the action. However, we get to witness the events that still went on during a very different year.

Furthermore, the uncertainty, the isolation and the tension are visible in Amen Break. Alongside the quietness we observe the effects of a devastating pandemic, the tensions between mask-wearers and anti-maskers, the power of thousands of voices shouting ‘Black Lives Matter’ on the streets.

So, Amen Break has a rhythm and a narrative that are hard to forget. Once again Prior invites the viewer to consider each individual event whilst at the same time, weaving a cohesive reality with each image.

About Thomas Prior

Prior is based in New York, but comes originally from Los Angeles. His images have a palpable cinematic presence. Further, his impeccable timing and sensitivity allow him to capture crucial moments by stepping back and observing his subjects. Prior’s portraiture is marked by contemplative, narrative-filled faces. today Prior works for clients including NASA, The New Yorker, TIME Magazine, and The New York Times, among many others.

Ol Pejeta

The photography book cover of Ol Pejeta by Jack Davison. In softcover wraparount cover light green to grey with rhino's skin.

Ol Pejeta by Jack Davison. First edition (2021). First impression. Large format paperback in new condition. Softcover booklet housed in oversized folded poster. No markings. this is a brand new book. Please see pictures. PayPal accepted, any questions please get in touch.

About Ol Pejeta

Can you imagine being the last one of your species? We can’t either.

However, this is something that Jack Davison documents and shares with us in his new monograph Ol Pejeta.

Ol Pejeta Conservascy is one of the largest rhinoceros sanctuaries in the world and it’s based in Kenya. Still, that’s not the most important thing about it. See, Ol Pejeta is home to the last two Northern White Rhinos in existence – mother and daughter Najin & Fatu.

In this beautifully presented monograph, Davison invites us to witness the life of the two creatures and their devoted caretaker Zacharia. The reason behind Davison’s visit to the sanctuary in the first place was for an article by the New York Times about the successful in-vitro fertilisation of their frozen eggs by a team of scientists. Which on its own gives us hope that we soon may be able to prevent the extinction of this species.

There’s the powerful play between light and dark which is ever present in Davison’s work. However, the contrasts are not only used in the making of the photographs, but also in the story as a whole.
The dark side of the story being the tragedy of yet another species being on the brink of extinction and the bright side being the hope that science and innovation can help protect the natural world.

Davison’s Ol Pejeta captures the power and grace of these two majestic creatures as well as their deep spiritual connection with their keepers, who guard them with their lives.
