About Burning Boats 1981-87
The photographs of Dafydd Jones first gained attention in 1981 after a portfolio of his work featuring Oxford dining societies led to win the London Sunday Times/Nikon Scholarship. He was subsequently hired by Tina Brown to photograph ‘Hunt Balls,’ debutante dances and weddings for Tatler magazine. After Jones spent the eighties travelling around England photographing parties, his pictures developed into an irreverent but affectionate portrait of eccentric English upper class life.
At the end of the 1980s Jones moved to New York and spent the early nineties working for Vanity Fair, Talk magazine and the New York Observer. After several years in the U.S. he returned to England, where has been a contracted photographer at the Sunday Telegraph, The Times and the Independent. For twenty years Jones did his own darkroom printing in black and white. In the mid-nineties he started using color and began experimenting with digital imaging, creating panoramic pictures of the socialite world. In his red-carpet series he used a panoramic time-lapse technique to try to capture the reality of celebrity media events. Recently Jones has returned to the darkroom again, creating prints of his early work and experimenting with printing digital pictures in the darkroom.
