About How Beautiful This Place Can Be
For How Beautiful This Place Can be, O’Sullivan returned to South Africa, where he is from and photographed the daily lives of people around him. The result is a powerful body of work that gathers the reality of the place. Accompanying the photos are extracts taken from family letters. Accordingly, the historical weight and the social relevance of this book are undeniable.
Stuart O’Sullivan’s images documents the political transformation of South Africa as well as the experience of his family. Through still lifes of family photos, family portraiture and contemplative landscapes as well as family documents, the photographer recreates what the country and its people were going at a very convulsive time.
About Stuart O’Sullivan
Stuart O’Sullivan is a New York based photographer from South Africa. Growing up as a member of the white middle class, his childhood was one of affluence and privilege but, as he moved towards adulthood, he became increasingly conscious of the deprivations endured by his fellow South Africans. However, belief in the need for fundamental change came hand in hand with anxiety for his family’s future. In the 1980s, he moved to New York and there he began to look through early family photographs.
With his work he studies identity, belonging and family dynamics as well as the social factors that influence the daily lives of those around him.
