About Memory City
Located in Rochester, New York, Eastman Kodak was one of the world’s leading manufacturers of photographic film for 125 years. Following the company’s declaration of bankruptcy in 2012, Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb traveled to Rochester to capture images of the city during the twilight of Kodak’s existence. So, Memory City responds to the uncertain future of Kodak film as a medium by presenting a view of Rochester that reflects the city’s prosperous past and current troubles.
Alex Webb is best known for his complex and vibrant color photographs of serendipitous or enigmatic moments, often in places with socio political tensions. Over the past 45 years, Webb has worked in places as varied as the U.S. – Mexico border, Haiti, Istanbul, and, most recently, a number of U.S. cities. “My work is questioning and exploratory,” he says. “I believe in photographs that convey a certain level of ambiguity, that ask questions rather than provide answers.”
Rebecca Norris Webb (born 1956) is an American photographer. Originally a poet, her seven books often combine both text and images. For the past 20 years, she’s lived in Brooklyn with Alex Webb, and together they teach photography workshops for museums, universities, and also arts organizations around the world.
