S. Billie Mandle is a photographer whose work explores place, perception, and the ephemeral. Her quiet, attentive approach to documenting the land and built environment reflects her background in science and religion. Her book, Asunder, was published by TBW in 2026.
Additional books include Circumference (Dust Collective, 2024), Reconciliation (Kehrer Verlag, 2020), and Stellar Skytron (Dust Collective, 2020). Mandle has been supported by fellowships from Light Work, Yaddo, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, and the New York Foundation for the Arts, as well as a research grant from UCLA.
Nominated for the Foam Paul Huf Award and the Prix Pictet, her photographs are held in several public collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Addison Gallery, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. She holds an MFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and a BA in biology from Williams College. She is a professor of photography at MassArt and previously taught at Hampshire College. Originally from California, she now lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
