About I Can’t Stand to See you Cry
I Can’t Stand to See you Cry focuses on the Texan landscape as well as its inhabitants. Through beautiful black and white images, Fortune examines the family dynamics, relationships of friendship and also interactions between strangers. Beyond exploring these relationships, Fortune analyses the environmental, identity-related and health issues present on these Texan communities.
Through his personal experiences, Fortune brings the daily occurrences, the tensions and the joyful moments, as well as the importance of the landscape, to the viewer. He goes back his family’s lineage using both, the perspective of an insider and an outsider. We could say Fortune has a deeply personal approach to his images that allows him to connect with history and preserve it through his work.
About Rahim Fortune
Rahim Fortune is a fine art and documentary photographer from Oklahoma. His work focuses on culture, geography and self expression. As a member of the Chickasaw Indian Nation tribe, Fortune has been documenting the community closest to him since 2016 through striking black and white portraiture of its older and younger generations dressed in intertribal regalia. “I began making documentary photographs as a way of understanding what is happening in regards to racial inequality and economic disparity,” he says. “I strive to create work that will allow others to learn and heal.”
