This volume was the catalogue for the exhibition "Stephen Shore: American Surfaces 1972," held July 16 - September 5, 1999, Die Photographische Sammlung / SK Stiftung Kultur, Cologne, and October 23 - December 5, 1999, at Fotografie Forum International, Frankfurt. The images, from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum, NYC, were conceived from the very beginning as a book. "American Surfaces" contains photographs, landscapes, interiors and portraits which Shore gathered on his travels throughout the United States.
