About
The memory of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, triggered by the massive earthquake of March 11, 2011, remains deeply etched in people’s minds. Yet, even while bearing the scars of such devastating destruction, Fukushima has demonstrated remarkable resilience. This series features poetic new photographs by Michael Kenna—an artist who loves Japan’s natural landscapes and atmosphere—capturing the region as it has recovered from the disaster. The portfolio comprises seven specially selected images that reveal the Fukushima of today, including the sunrise over Inawashiro Lake—renowned for having some of the clearest water in Japan—and Terushima Island, which floats in the sea approximately 250 meters off the coast.
