About Bresils – Sao Paulo

French photographer Ludovic Carème has been living and photographing in Brasil for over ten years. In this publication, Carème has focused his lens on the city of São Paulo. And more particularly on the inhabitants of the favela Agua Branca made of poor workers. Who are trapped between constant harassment by the police and the impossibility to find an accommodation despite the fact that they are working. His powerful portraits testify to exclusion of parts of the population. Also, of the gigantic social gaps that keep increasing. Ludovic Carème is publishing simultaneously a second publication dedicated to his work in Brasil, Amazonie, on the primal forest and its cultivations of rubber along the Amazon river.

Artist Bio

Ludovic Carème developed a passion for photography from high school, reading the reports of the newspaper Liberation in the RER at the beginning of the 1980s. After that, he studied photography at ETPA in Toulouse and published his first photo in Liberation in 1995. Based on an idea from Jean Hatzfeld, he painted portraits of couples of refugees who had escaped the horror in Srebrenica. This first experience transmits to him the urgency of bearing witness to injustice and human fragility. His sensitive style is both contemporary and anchored in the tradition of portrait painters.
