John Hinde, was one of the pioneers of colour photography in the UK, and it was his postcards that were sold all over the world that made him famous. He started colour photography in the 1930s, studied architecture, and then went to school to study photography in 1937. There, he studied under Frank Newens, who is said to be the pioneer of colour printing in the UK. He started his own company in 1956, and in 1957, his first six postcards were sold at Shannon Airport in Ireland. Then, in the 1960s and 1970s, the demand for postcards increased due to the increase in the number of tourists, and in the 1970s, millions of postcards were sold around the world. This book was made to coincide with an exhibition held in Ireland in 1993 (Martin Parr was also involved in the exhibition), and it compiles postcards from the 1950s onwards, as well as his work from the 1940s. The postcards, some of which were by photographers belonging to Hinde's company and trained by Hinde, feature the scenic landscapes and culture of the tourist destinations.
