About Howling Winds

Chapter 5 of Yogananthan’s long-term project A Myth of Two Souls is presented here, this chapter is Howling Winds. A Myth of Two Souls offers a contemporary retelling of The Ramayana. A seven-chapter tale first recorded by the Sanskrit poet Valmiki around 300 BC. The Ramayana is one of the founding epics of Hindu mythology. However, it has been reshaped and rewritten many times over the centuries. Yogananthan has traveled all over India since 2013 trying to retracing the itinerary of the epic’s heroes. Balanced somewhere between fiction and reality. As a result, he deliberately blurs the lines in different aesthetic approaches. Weaving together different elements such as colour, hand-painted and illustrated photographs, that are interspersed with vernacular images to compose the layers of this timeless story. At the end of the last chapter Princess Sita is kidnapped by Ravana. As a result thousands of animals gather together, from all across the globe to search for the Princess. They know that Ravana lives across the bright ocean on the island of Lanka. Therefore the images in the book are shot along the coastlines of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.
