About The Eighth Day

The Eight Day is a project that chronicles Gao Shan's relationship with his mother. The photographer was adopted at the age of only eight days old. Through a series of intimate portraits and images of their home, Shan invites us into their own familiarity and interactions. As a result, this is a deeply personal project that was born out of the photographer's desire to connect with his mother, since he acknowledges their connection to be a distant one. Gao's photographs document the quotidian activities and details of his mother's life as well as the gap that lives between them, through the exploration of objects and spaces in their home.
