About The New Chinese
The New Chinese is a project that explores the rapidly changing society of China as urbanization takes more and more space in the country. Thus, the photographer studies how Western lifestyles take over tradition and how people keep up with this shift. The images were taken between 2006 and 2016 in Shenzen, a city that was at the time going through dramatic transformations. Zhengde managed to capture the development of this area via the people who were pouring in to work. The result is a fantastic collection of photographs showing us all sorts of people, all sorts of contexts, ideas and changes of the New Chinese.
