About Freedom or Death
Freedom or Death is a project that started with a box of negatives and transparencies that Mendel left in a friend's garage in Johannesburg. Left in there for a long time, the box got rained on and the water caused damage to the top layers. Those photographs were taken by Mendel years before during the final years of apartheid, when he, as a witness of the uprising and mobilisation, captured the movement.
The result is an excellent documentation of the highly conflictive years of the end of the Apartheid regime. It's a project of re-engaging with the past.
About Gideon Mendel
Gideon Mendel (born 31 August 1959) is a photographer. His work engages with contemporary social issues of global concern. His intimate style of committed image making, and long-term commitment to projects has earned him acclaim.
Mendel has a career spanning over 40 years. Originally from South Africa, he is currently based in London. It was his work as a ‘struggle photographer’ during the final years of apartheid that first brought attention to his work.
