About The Green of this Notebook

John Divola’s The Green of this Notebook is an artist’s book based on Jean-Paul Sartre’s Being and Nothingness. In which Sartre attempted, in the abstract, to examine the essential nature of being — and in doing so, he repeatedly captures his ideas with real examples. In this book, Divola presents a series of related double pages. So, the images on the left are pages from Sartre’s book, with Sartre’s examples highlighted. Then, on the right are photographs that have been made to correspond to the example.

The book opens with the highlighted text, ‘I am on a narrow path — without a guard rail — which goes along a precipice,’ Then, with Divola’s corresponding photograph opposite. The literal relationship of image/text combinations continues throughout the book. Then, the book ends with, ‘If I eat pink cake, the taste of it is pink.’

Artist Bio

Divola was born in 1949 in Los Angeles, CA. He grew up in the San Fernando Valley. He is known for his photographic portrayal of his hometown Los Angeles and also the landscape surrounding it. Divola’s images capture deserted warehouses, homes, as well as landscapes of Southern California’s beaches. Also, his work presents the typically sunny and bright southern Californian landscape as bleak, arid, melancholic.

He later received his MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1974. His works have been featured at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, LACMA in Los Angeles, and many other museums and galleries. The artist currently lives in Riverside, CA, where he continues to document his native California. He is also a professor of photography at UC Riverside.
