So, in “Discharge,” which includes images taken between 2008 and 2015, Collins presents an un-airbrushed look at her process of growing up as a woman. She presents an examination of herself and her body as well as its role in the wider context of a sexualised yet rigidly policed visual culture. Through photographs that often feature intimate and private moments between Collins and her friends.
Petra Collins is a Canadian artist, photographer, fashion model and also director who rose to prominence in the early 2010s. When shooting photography, Collins exclusively uses 35mm film.
In 2010, Collins created the website “The Ardorous” as an online platform for young female artists. Reacting to the male-dominated art world, the group’s goal is to question contemporary ideologies of femininity and recast women in positive, empowered roles.
Her photography is characterized by a feminine, dreamlike feel, also informed in part by a female gaze approach. She was a resident photographer for Rookie magazine as well as a casting agent for Richard Kern. She has also directed a number of short films, including music videos for Carly Rae Jepsen, Lil Yachty, Selena Gomez, and Cardi B. Then, in 2016, Collins was chosen as a face of Gucci. She has been labeled an “it girl” by photographer and mentor Ryan McGinley and also by Vanity Fair and The New Yorker magazines.
