About
In Flagrante, Killip's "subjective book about my time in England" during its "de-industrialisation" is one of the greatest photobooks of the late 20th century, "a dark, pessimistic journey, perhaps even a secret odyssey, where rigorous documentary is suffused with a contemplative inwardness, a rare quality in modern photography" as put by Gerry Badger. Killip has chosen, for the book's epigraph, Yeats's poem, "He wishes for the cloths of Heaven", with the famous closing lines, "tread softly because you tread on my dreams", a choice which Berger & Grant, in their essay, describe as "searingly apt. for it is as if all the photos here have been branded, like a hundred cattle, with the tenderness of those eight lines."
