Sam Haskins (1926-2009) was a South African born British Photographer who achieved acclaim as a commercial artist, first in Johannesburg and then from 1968 in London and finally Australia in 2001. While working as advertising and calendar art director/photographer he always found time to produce high influential personal creative projects. These ranged from the universally famous ‘Cowboy Kate & Other Stories’ (1964) which is both lyrical in content while being a tour-de-force of creative photography, to forgotten treasures like ‘Sam Haskins A Bologna’ (1984) a unique masterpiece of street photography. A multi-talented artist whose clients often trusted him to conceive, art direct and shoot assignments, he was also a consumate craftsman, which saw expression in everything from set building to make-up to printing in the darkroom.
