About Sapeurs: Ladies and Gentlemen of the Congo

La Sape (Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes), the Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People is a fashion subculture growing in the Republic of the Congo. Its affiliates are known as Sapeurs. Even though they have ordinary lives and jobs, they transform themselves into extravagant, fashionable dandies and sashay through the streets turning heads. Accordingly, they are treated like rock stars or celebrities, bringing joy and fun to their communities. Besides, they defy their circumstances by creating these stylish personas. Traditionally, the practice went down the line through men. However,  women have decided to break that boundary as well and joined La Sape. Zaidi's portraits are full of colour, joy and attitude. Sapeurs is a magnificent portrait of these Congolese communities and their edgy subcultures that beyond bringing fashion and style, also act as a provocation and a form of colonial resistance, social activism and peaceful protest.
