About At Home

In 1979, Pope John Paul II made his way to the States for his first pastoral visit. That same year, Susan Kandel picked up her camera and joined the devoted crowds that awaited in anticipation gathered in Boston Common. She ended up approaching  two families, chatting to them and being invited to their homes. There she took photographs of their lives at home. Ten years went by and the relationship between the photographer and the families continued, allowing Kandel to produce a unique body of work, so private and honest, that creates an illusion of belonging for the viewer. Like guests, we are invited to join the two families in the privacy of their own rooms and interactions, sharing some of their moments through time. In conclusion, Kandel's camera inserts itself in the story like another family member, without altering the home dynamics, allowing us to participate in them.
