About Songbook
Alec Soth has recently turned his lens toward community life in the country. In order to aid in his search, Soth assumed the increasingly obsolescent role of community newspaper reporter. Consequently, from 2012-2014, Soth traveled state by state while working on his self-published newspaper, The LBM Dispatch. In addition being on assignment for the New York Times and others. Coming from upstate New York to Silicon Valley, Soth attended hundreds of meetings, dances, festivals and communal gatherings in search of human interaction in an era of virtual social networks. Above all, with Songbook, Soth has stripped these pictures of their news context in order to highlight the longing for connection at their root. As a result Songbook is a lyrical depiction of the tension between American individualism and the desire to be united.
Artist Bio
Alec Soth’s work is rooted in the American photographic tradition that Walker Evans famously termed “documentary Style.” Concerned with the mythologies and oddities that proliferate America’s disconnected communities, Soth has an instinct for the relationship between narrative and metaphor. His clarity of voice has drawn many comparisons to literature, but he believes photography to be more fragmented; “It’s more like poetry than writing a novel.”
