This book is an artist book that photographer Linda Conner recreated by adding collage work to the original book Das kleine Buch der Tropenwunder (1954) with illustrations by German naturalist and entomologist and illustrator Maria Sibylla Merian. Linda Conner’s playful and bizarre imaginative world is superimposed on the descriptive pictures recreated by the adventurous artist Maria. Linda’s bold and free collages, in which she plays with or collides with the plants and insects drawn by Maria, are an extension of instinctive senses and imagination that go beyond observation and understanding. The wild energy and surreal world that we have not yet experienced are being re-opened through the encounter between Maria Sibylla Merian of 17th century Europe and Linda Conner, an artist of the 21st century America. The mystery of nature, the paradox of life and death, and the adventurous spirit of the artist who opens up the unknown world have been born as a small book for us here and now, transcending boundaries of time and place.
