There are no markings to the copy in fine condition, simply minor toning to extremities of pages.
About Empire
So, ‘Empire’ is a journey across the South Atlantic exploring life on four remote islands, British Overseas Territories. Intertwined through history as relics of the once formidable British Empire. Since 2007 I have voyaged to Ascension Island, Tristan da Cunha, the Falkland Islands and St Helena. To photograph the people, landscapes and also pockets of history embedded within each place. I spent up to a month at a time in each territory. Travelling 60,000 miles around the Atlantic via military outposts, low lit airstrips and long voyages aboard cargo ships, fishing vessels as well as the last working Royal Mail Ship.
Artist Bio
Jon Tonks is a British photographer based in the UK. His work focuses on telling stories about people’s lives shaped by history and geography. With an MA in Documentary Photography & Photojournalism from London College of Communication, his work has been featured in The New York Times, The Guardian, Sunday Times, Telegraph and FT Weekend Magazines, as well as the British Journal of Photography and more. He has been shortlisted for the Taylor Wessing National Portrait Prize three times, twice for the Terry O’Neill award, and in 2014, Tonks was presented with the Vic Odden Award by the Royal Photographic Society for his first book Empire – a journey across the South Atlantic exploring life on four remote British Oveaseas Territories. The book was hailed by Martin Parr as one of his best books the year.
