About
The images range from studio portraits of Japanese women to landscapes in which the weather features prominently, to images of such figures as Richard Nixon. The element linking the images turns out to be the fact that each sequence comments on a different event that took place in 1974.
Kishin Shinoyama(b.1940) is internationally acclaimed for his editorial work and photographs of celebrities. Shinoyama represented Japan in the 1976 Venice Biennale with his series “Meaning of the House” (1972-1975), which reflects his interest in recording architecture around Japan. His most famous images, however, are his intimate snapshots of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, photographed in Central Park just three months prior to Lennon’s death. Initially working as a commercial photographer for Japanese advertising agency Light Publicity Company, he went freelance in 1968. He rose to prominence with his daring nude imagery, as in his iconic series “Birth,” composed of dramatic, surrealist images that elegantly meld human bodies with the natural landscape. Approaching his surroundings with a nondiscriminating eye, Shinoyama has also photographed the transformation of his home city of Tokyo in the 21st century.
