Mayumi Hosokura is a mid-career contemporary visual artist, who was born in Japan in 1979.
Mayumi Hosokura grew up during the 1980s and was influenced by the artistic atmosphere of the time. The generation of artists that grew up in, and were inspired by, the nineteen eighties was influenced by a period of fast-growing global capitalism. Furthermore, by political upheaval, significant wealth differences. But also, by global mass media and distinctive music and fashion, including electronic pop music and hip hop.
Hosokura has published several books. Amongst those published so far is Transparency is the new Mystery, which comprises twenty-two images of nudes and crystals. Also, her new book New Skin, which was deeply inspired by Donna Haraway’s writing and is a proposition for a new way of thinking about identity, the body and desire.
