So, the fruit of five different trips to Bolivia between 1997 and 2015. Depardon’s black and white photography highlights the harsh beauty of the landscape, the ravaged faces of the peasants, the omnipresent silhouettes of women, and also the magic of ancestral traditions. From the desert plains of Salar de Uyuni and the mountain village of Tarabuco, to the serenity of Lake Titicaca. Raymond Depardon takes us on a journey filled with humanity, then culminating in the discovery of Vallegrande, in the footsteps of Che Guevara, whose image has had a lasting and profound impact on the collective memory.
Artist Bio
Raymond Depardon, born in France in 1942, began taking photographs on his family farm in Garet at the age of 12. Apprenticed to a photographer optician in Villefranche-sur-Saône, he then left for Paris in 1958. He joined the Dalmas agency in Paris in 1960 as a reporter, and then in 1966 he co-founded the Gamma agency, reporting from all over the world. From 1974 to 1977, as a photographer and filmmaker, he covered the kidnap of a French ethnologist, François Claustre, in northern Chad. Alongside his photographic career, he also began to make documentary films: 1974, Une Partie de Campagne and San Clemente.
