About Good Morning America (Volume Two)

This is the second volume in an ongoing series, a 10 year project, by Power. Good Morning America explores the landscapes of the USA from the perspective of a British photographer raised on American cultural exports. Power, as everyone, was heavily exposed to American culture growing up during the 21st century. Through popular media such as film, television, and fashion, this exposure shaped his vision, and thus intrigue, of America. This book is a collection of Power's photographic depiction of America, gathered during his time travelling the continent. There are few people in Power's photographs as he explores America as an outsider. There are no portraits, connections, anecdotes, or intimate human relations here. He instead addresses a series of surfaces and objects which tend to showcase examples of muted disappointment and pessimism. Power finds a nation divided by race, geography, economic status, and inequality.

Artist Bio

Mark Power was born in 1959 in Harpenden, UK. He now lives in Brighton, UK. 'As a child, he discovered his father's home-made enlarger in the family attic. A contraption consisting of an upturned flowerpot, a light bulb and a simple camera lens. His interest in photography probably began at this moment, although he later went to art college to study life-drawing and painting instead. After graduating, he travelled for two years around South-East Asia and Australia. To support himself Power tried a number of jobs (he was an English teacher, a television actor and a fish farm attendant, he painted cinema murals, produced large numbers of identical paintings for others to sell as their own, and ended up running the camera department of a large chemist). While travelling, Power began to realise he enjoyed using a camera more than a pencil. He decided to 'become a photographer' on his return to England two years later.'
