The portraits in this book are of people connected in some way with the arts who have found themselves, at one time or another, in front of my camera. No attempt has been made to turn it into either a comprehensive or representative record. From the vast amount of material at my disposal I have made a selection prompted in the first instance by the photographs as such, and not by the persons represented on them. As a result, the choice does not imply any attempt at an evaluation of the people concerned, or of their work. My interest has been in portraits as portraits only. And the only common denominator is that all these people have connections with the arts — be it literature, the theatre, ballet, music, painting or whatever.
